Tacoma Rainiers News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Stefen Romero collected three hits and Mike Zunino homered and drove in a pair of runs as the Tacoma Rainiers clipped the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 5-4 at Security Service Field on Tuesday. The Rainiers now own a 0.5 game lead over the Sky Sox in the PCL Pacific Northern Division.
Romero turned in a 3-for-4 effort, including a go-ahead single in the seventh that scored Brad Miller and broke open a 3-3 tie with one out. The outfielder reached base a total of four times in the series opener.
Zunino erased a 3-2 Rainiers deficit after belting a game-tying solo home run earlier in the seventh - the catcher's ninth home run of the season and second over his last four games. He provided Tacoma an initial 1-0 edge with a ground out in the second that plated outfielder Carlos Peguero.
As a team, the Rainiers combined to collect a total of nine hits on Tuesday. Peguero turned in Tacoma's other multi-hit outing and went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. First baseman Jesus Montero doubled and Alex Liddi drove in one run.
Reliever Brian Sweeney (6-1) collected his team-leading sixth win of the season after holding the Sky Sox to three runs on five hits over 2.2 innings. Right-hander Logan Bawcom collected the final two outs of the game and picked up his team-high eighth save.
Starter Jeremy Bonderman allowed one run on five hits over 4.0 innings in his 11th start this season. The right-hander walked two without recording a strikeout.
The Rainiers (32-21) look to extend their lead in the division when they take the field for the second game of their four-game series at Colorado Springs (30-20) tomorrow, May 29. Right-hander Andrew Carraway (5-1, 2.98) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against Sky Sox right-hander Chris Volstad (2-0, 4.02). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
