Cubs Can't Complete Comeback

Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - The Nashville Sounds (15-36) built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and hung on to beat the Iowa Cubs (24-27) at Greer Stadium tonight. The Cubs had the potential tying run in scoring position in four of the last five innings, but couldn't push it across. This series is even at a game apiece.

Cubs' starter Nick Struck (3-4) gave up a two-run double to Josh Prince in the first inning and a two-run double to Caleb Gindl in the second. Both hits came with two outs in the inning. Struck would settle down and get through five innings without allowing any other runs. He allowed eight hits, walked two, and struck out three, but lost for the first time in four starts. Casey Coleman held the Sounds with three scoreless innings in relief. Coleman has not allowed a run in 8.2 innings over his last three appearances.

Johnnie Lowe was making his first triple-A start for the Sounds after beginning the season in Nashville's bullpen. He retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before the Cubs broke through in the fourth. Brian Bogusevic drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by former Cub Blake Lalli, and scored on a double by Dave Sappelt. Brad Nelson followed with an RBI single and the Cubs had cut the Sounds' lead in half.

The Sounds turned to the bullpen in the fifth and brought in veteran Clay Hensley for his Nashville debut. He walked J.C. Boscan, gave up a double to Struck. Logan Watkins followed with a base hit that produced another run to get the Cubs to within one at 4-3. After a groundout moved Watkins to second, the Sounds brought in left Travis Webb. Webb struck out Brett Jackson and walked Sappelt to load the bases before getting pinch-hitter Brent Lillibridge to fly out to get out of the inning.

Former Cub Frankie De La Cruz pitched the sixth and seventh innings for the Sounds. Donnie Murphy led off the sixth with a double, but was stranded. In the eighth, the Cubs had two on and one out, but Sappelt hit a rocket line drive the turned into a double play when Bogusevic couldn't get back to second in time.

Michael Olmstead pitched a perfect eighth to set up closer Rob Wooten for the ninth. Boscan and pinch-hitter Darnell McDonald opened the inning with singles. Watkins attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Wooten fielded the ball and threw to third for a force out on Boscan. Wooten then induced Bogusevic into a double play that ended the game and earned his seventh save of the season. Webb (1-2) was credited with the win.

The Cubs and Sounds play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Greer Stadium. The Cubs will send LH Brooks Raley (4-3, 4.53) to the mound against LH Chris Narveson starting on a major league rehab assignment for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
