Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - Chris Rusin set season-highs with eight strikeouts and eight innings pitched and led the Iowa Cubs (24-26) to a 6-2 win over the Nashville Sounds (14-36) at Greer Stadium tonight. The Cubs lead this series 1-0 and are 3-0 against the Sounds this year. Iowa has won nine of their last 11 games.

Rusin's only blemish came in the bottom of the first inning. Scooter Gennett led off with an infield single and scored from first on a two-out double by Stephen Parker. Rusin would allow just four more hits the rest of the way and retired 13 in a row between the third and seventh innings. Rusin (4-4) has won consecutive starts for the first time this season and leads the team with six quality starts for the year.

After Nashville got on the board in the bottom of the first, the Cubs came right back in the top of the second against Sounds' starter Zach Kroenke (2-7). Dave Sappelt reached on an error to start the inning and moved to third when Donnie Murphy doubled off the wall in left. Edwin Maysonet and Luis Flores followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

Rusin was dominant on the mound and helped himself with the bat. With a man at third and one out in the top of the fifth, Rusin singled up the middle for his first RBI of the season, extending the Cubs' lead to 3-1. In the top of the sixth, Brett Jackson drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out homer by Maysonet. It was Maysonet's fifth home run of the season, extending the Cubs' lead to 5-1. The blast also knocked Kroenke out of the game.

The Cubs added their last run on a solo homer by Brent Lillibridge off Kyle Heckathorn in the seventh inning. Lillibridge has homered in back-to-back games and the Cubs have gone deep in a season-high 11 straight.

The Sounds added a final run off Eduardo Sanchez in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Hunter Morris, who finished with two hits and extended his hitting streak to eight games for the Sounds.

The Cubs and Sounds play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Greer Stadium. The Cubs will send RH Nick Struck (3-3, 5.93) to the mound against RH Johnnie Lowe (0-0, 4.71) for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
