Round Rock Express News Release
NEW ORLEANS - Outfielder Aaron Cunningham hit two home runs to propel the Round Rock Express (28-24) past the New Orleans Zephyrs (24-27) 3-2 in the series opener at Zephyr Field Tuesday night.
The Express got to New Orleans starting pitcher Brian Flynn early, putting up two runs in the first inning. Shortstop Greg Miclat hit a one out single to set the stage for Cunningham's first home run of the night, a two-run shot on a 3-0 pitch.
The Zephyrs got one run back in the bottom half of the frame. Express starter Scott Richmond allowed back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second. Zephyrs' center fielder Kevin Mattison stole third and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff.
Bats on both sides stayed quiet until the bottom of the seventh inning. Express reliever Yoshinori Tateyama replaced Richmond and gave up a solo home run on his second pitch of the inning, tying the game at 2-2. Tateyama got third baseman Paul Gran to pop out before giving up a single to Gorkys Hernandez. Pitcher Nate Robertson replaced Tateyama and retired the next two batters, ending the threat.
New Orleans reliever Chris Hatcher replaced Flynn in the top of the eighth. He recorded the first two outs, getting center fielder Engel Beltre to pop out and Miclat to fly out. Cunningham stepped to the plate and smashed his second home run of the game, a solo shot, over the left field wall, giving the Express a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Round Rock reliever Kyle McClellan came in to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth, giving up a one-out single before recording the final two outs of the game. McClellan picked up his second save of the season while Robertson earned his first win, improving to 1-1. Hatcher took the loss for New Orleans, dropping to 1-1.
Round Rock continues the four-game series with game two tomorrow in New Orleans. LHP Ryan Feierabend (1-1, 4.91 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Express against the Zephyrs' RHP Jacob Turner (3-4, 4.47 ERA). The Express returns home to Dell Diamond on Saturday, June 1 for four games against the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers).
