
RailCats Suffer Second Straight One-Run Setback

GRAND PRAIRIE, Tex. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats closed the season opening series with a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Grand Prairie AirHogs in wild affair in Texas on Sunday night.
Three straight hits to open the game greeted Grand Prairie starter Jae Jung as the RailCats opened a 1-0 lead before taking the field. Adam Klein opened with a double to right-center. Mike Massaro reached on a bunt single, and Brad Boyer deposited a single into right to score Klein with the first run.
Grand Prairie batted around in the third inning, scoring five times to nab a 5-1 lead. Derrick Gordon retired the first two batters of the inning before consecutive walks to Kevin Thompson and David Thomas. Cesar Nicholas homered to center to put the AirHogs in front. The longball was the first of the series for Grand Prairie. John Alonso added a two-run double off the wall in right tie the score.
The RailCats took one back in the top of the fourth, scoring an unearned run. Chris Carrara led off with a single and stole second base before moving to third on a throwing error. Carrara scored on Johnny Bowden's RBI groundout. Brian Kolb, activated before the game, roped a two-out double down the left field line in the sixth to score Toddric Johnson and Mike Rohde, bringing the RailCats within 5-4.
Jon Hunton faced drama for the second consecutive night but was able to shut the door as the RailCats left runners at second and third in the top of the ninth. Three RailCats were ejected prior to the start of the bottom of the eighth. The bullpen continued its strong start with four scoreless frames from Zeb Engle and Brian Grening. Massaro and Boyer posted two hits each at the top of the lineup as the RailCats outhit Grand Prairie for the fourth time in the series.
The RailCats have an off day on Monday before opening a series at Kansas City on Tuesday. RHP Scott Shaw (0-0, 6.75) will make his second start of the summer after tossing four innings in Thursday's season opening win. Kansas City counters with RHP Mike Rocco (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. The series marks the only visit to Community America Ballpark this season for the RailCats.
