Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - Members of last year's Captains received their championship rings in a pre-game ceremony at Fair Grounds Field Saturday night before this year's club went out and celebrated the occasion with a 13-2 romp over the Lincoln Saltdogs to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Bryan Frichter (3-4, three runs scored), Uriak Marquez (2-4, three runs, three RBIs) and Brian Peterson (3-4, three runs, four RBIs) were the offensive stars for the Captains, fittingly all three were members of last year's championship club. The Captains got on the board in the bottom of the first when Joey Gathright scored on a Bryan Sabatella ground out. Gathright had reached base after being hit by pitch-he's been hit by a pitch in all three games this season-and then stole second and third. Peterson's RBI single scored Mike Provencher with the second run of the game in the second.
Lincoln tied the game in the third on an RBI double by Mikael Jova and an RBI triple by Pat Trettel. However, the Captains would break the game wide open in the bottom of the third. Robert Perry scored on a passed ball by Trettel and Sabatella was next to cross the plate on a Frichter single. Mike Provencher would knock in Fricther with a sacrifice fly, followed by a Peterson RBI single to score Marquez, who had singled earlier in the inning. Peterson would cross the plate to make it 8-2 when Gathright reached on an error by third baseman Brandon Jones.
Shreveport-Bossier would add to the rout in the fourth. Sabatella would lead off the inning with a triple, but was lifted for a pinch runner after coming up limping at third. Andres Rodriguez knocked in the pitch run, Alex Cowart. Marquez followed a Frichter single with the Captains first home run of the year, over the right field fence. The Captains added three more in the sixth off Lincoln reliever Brandon Smith.
Ryan DiPietro (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing two runs and seven hits to pick up his first win of the year. Lincoln starter Alex Maestri (0-1) left the game after retiring just two batters in the third inning. He surrendered seven runs (six earned) in 2.2 innings. For the Captains, Ben Shivers, Jameson Maj and Dan Griffin threw four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only three hits and striking out three. For the first time this year, the Captains didn't allow a walk.
The Captains and Saltdogs finish up their four-game series Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. Shreveport-Bossier's Aaron Cunningham will take the mound against Lincoln's John James.
