Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - After Shreveport-Bossier's bats came alive for a 13 run output Saturday night, they were quieted by Saltdogs starter John James in the final game of this four game series, as Lincoln defeated the Captains 7-4 to leave Shreveport with a series split.

James (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings to pick up the win in his first start of the season. Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (0-1) was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings. The Captains fell behind early and never came all the way back, despite mounting rallies in each of the final three innings. They left two men on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

Lincoln got on the board in the top of the first thanks to Blake Gailen, who had a tremendous opening season series (8-for-18). He led off the game with a triple and then scored on a Gavin Dickey RBI single. Lincoln would add two in the fourth, with an RBI groundout by Mikael Jova and a one-run single off the bat of Chris Smith.

Shreveport-Bossier didn't have a baserunner until Joey Gathright led off the fourth inning with a double. He would score later in the inning on a Bryan Frichter ground out. However, the Saltdogs would break the game open in the next frame, sending ten men to the plate in the fifth and scoring four times. Gailen had an RBI double followed by a Dickey triple to score him from second. Dickey would score on a Jon Nelson single and Smith's single made it a 7-1 game. The Saltdogs, who knocked Cunningham out of the game earlier in the inning, loaded the bases with two outs before reliever Justin Young got Kevin Rios to ground out to staunch the bleeding.

The Captains would crawl back into the game with a run in the fifth on a Gathright sacrifice fly and another in the sixth on Uriak Marquez's second home run in as many nights-a solo shot to right field almost to the identical spot as his Saturday night homer. Shreveport-Bossier failed to score in the seventh or eighth, but Jeff Hulett, who was hit by a pitch to reach base, scored on a Frichter single in the ninth. With Frichter at first and Gathright at second, Andres Rodriguez came to the plate representing the tying run but he fouled out to the first baseman Phil Hawke to end a frustration 0-5 night.

With the loss, the Captains fall to 2-2 on the year. They open up a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers May 16 with a day/night doubleheader. The first game begins at 10:05 a.m. for Raising Cane's DeSoto Parish School's D.A.R.E. Day. In the nightcap it's Jose Cuervo Margarita & Maker's Mark Monday, with half price margaritas and frozen drinks all night long. Gates open for the morning game at 9:05 a.m. with gates for the later game opening at 6:05 p.m.
