Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox trailed by three going into the ninth inning against the Wichita Wingnuts on Sunday night, but a bases loaded three-RBI double by Tim Alberts got the job done to give the Sox their first win as an organization in front of 2,338 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Sox reliever Lee Henry (1-0) got the win, despite allowing a ninth inning run, though he did strike out the last two batters he faced. Wingnuts reliever Cephas Howard (1-1) got the loss, allowing four Sox runs in the ninth.
Wichita took an early lead in the first inning as Josh Horn led off with a single and scored on a Ryan Patterson double. He would later score on a Juan Richardson RBI single, who would later score on a Josh Workman RBI triple for a 3-0 Wingnuts lead.
The Sox used a big fourth inning to take the lead. Chris Nash led off with a walk and was replaced at first by Tim Alberts following a fielder's choice. Adam De La Garza singled to send Alberts to third and a walk to Jason White loaded the bases. Fehlandt Lentini hit into a fielder's choice to retire White but plated Alberts for the first Amarillo run. Following a Matt Tucker walk to reload the bases, Cyle Hankerd worked the count and pounded a 2-2 pitch to the right field wall for a three-RBI double to give the Sox a 4-3 advantage.
The Wingnuts fought back in the seventh inning as Horn again led off with a single and scored on a Patterson triple to tie the game. Jorge Cortes followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Horn for a 5-4 Wichita lead. They added an insurance run in the eighth and ninth to increase the deficit to three.
The Sox again tried to use late inning heroics to win the game. Tucker led off with a walk, Cruz singled and Benji Johnson walked to load the bases. With the outfielders playing deep, Nash hit a single to shallow left to score Tucker from third. Alberts stepped up and doubled to deep right center field to score all three baserunners for a walkoff 8-7 Sox victory.
With the win, the Sox improve to 1-3 while the Wingnuts fall to 3-1. Monday, Amarillo will travel to El Paso to take on the Diablos for the opening game of the three-game set at 8:05pm. The game can be heard by visiting www.diablos.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
