QUEBEC, QC - Steve Brown drove in three of the Capitales four runs in a 4-2 victory over the RailCats in the series opener on Monday night. The loss ended the RailCats (24-32) three-game win streak.
Quebec took the lead in the second, as Bobby Wagner hit a one-out single and reached third when Jon Gulbransen threw the ball away on a pick-off attempt. Wagner scored on Brown's sac fly to give the Capitales a 1-0 lead.
Mike Coles led off the fourth with a home run to dead center, his second of the season, to tie the game at one. Craig Maddox was hit by a pitch and Brian Kolb singled with one out. Quebec starter Bryan Rembisz made a wild throw to second that moved the runners to second and third, and Matt Forgatch hit a sac fly to left to score Maddox and give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.
Gulbransen gave up an unearned run on three hits in five innings in the no-decision. He has given up two runs, one earned in 8 2/3 innings in two starts for the RailCats.
Nolan Nicholson relieved Gulbransen in the sixth and gave up RBI singles to Josue Peley and Brown as Quebec took a 3-2 lead.
The 'Cats appeared to tie the game in the seventh, as David Cooper laid down a bunt and Brian Kolb crossed the plate. However, Cooper was called out on the play for stepping on home plate while attempting the bunt.
The Capitales added a run in the eighth on another sac fly by Brown with the bases-loaded. Coles robbed Brown of a grand slam with a leaping catch at the wall on the play.
Nicholson (2-3) took the loss while Rembisz (7-2) held the RailCats to two runs, one earned in seven frames for the victory. T.J. Stanton pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save.
Game two of the three-game series will be on Tuesday night at 6:05 Central time. Morgan Coombs (2-5, 5.77) will take the ball for Gary.
