Goldeyes Back on the Winning Horse to Start Road Trip

July 16, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

After two straight losses at home, the Winnipeg Goldeyes found the winning secret on the road on Monday night.

A great start by young lefty Rich Hawkins and a 13-hit attack was exactly what the doctor ordered as Winnipeg went into Lincoln and whipped the SaltDogs 7-2.

With the win, Winnipeg stopped a two-game losing streak, improved to 33-22 and remained within one game of first-place Fargo in the race for the top spot in the American Association's North Division. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beat Sioux Falls 3-1 on Monday night and have now won 13 straight games.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the sixth after Hawkins and Lincoln starter Moises Melendez dueled for five shutout innings. Jon Weber singled but after Luis Alen singled, Weber seemed to twist his knee heading into second so he came out of the game and was replaced by Kaohi Downing (yes, the same Kaohi Downing as the relief pitcher Kaohi Downing). Josh Mazzola then walked to load the bases and Downing scored on a ground out by Kyle Day.

Lincoln answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but in the seventh, the Goldeyes exploded for four. Ridge Carpenter singled, Price Kendall singled, Carpenter went to third when Chris Roberson was safe on a fielder's choice and then both Carpenter and Roberson scored when Yurendell de Caster doubled. De Caster scored on a wild pitch and then Downing walked. Downing scored on a double by Josh Mazzola and the Goldeyes suddenly had a 5-1 lead.

Winnipeg put up two more in the eighth as Jose Duran singled, stole second and then went to third on a single by Carpenter. Kendall was then safe at first on an error by Lincoln third baseman Mike Provencher and that loaded the bases. Duran scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Roberson and then Carpenter, who had tagged on the Roberson sacrifice, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of de Caster.

That's all the Fish needed as relief pitchers Alex Jones, Zach Baldwin and Craig James held the SaltDogs to one run the rest of the way.

De Caster was the hitting hero even though he went one-for-four. He scored a run and drove in three. Weber went two-for-three before being injured while Roberson had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Jones (2-0, 2.86 ERA) earned the victory in relief while SaltDogs reliever Ronny Morla (0-3, 11.57 ERA), who allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings, suffered the loss. There was no save.

The Goldeyes and SaltDogs will play Game 2 of this three-game series Tuesday night in Lincoln. The Goldeyes don't return home until next Tuesday, July 24, when the Quebec Capitales visit Shaw Park.

Game time in Lincoln on Tuesday is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
