Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WICHITA, Kansas - The Central Division leading Gary SouthShore RailCats saw a game slice off their advantage after rallying from a 5-0 deficit only to watch as Wichita's Juan Richardson hit a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to secure an 8-6 win in the opener of a big series Friday night.

The first four batters of the contest recorded hits for Wichita as the Wingnuts plated four runs in the first inning to take the lead. Josh Horn doubled home the first run. Richardson added an RBI single with Josh Workman dropping a two-run single into right. Wichita built on the lead with a run scoring on a wild pitch from RailCat starter Ryne Reynoso in the third to distance the advantage to 5-0. Reynoso battled into the sixth inning, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.

The RailCats were able to score a pair of runs in the fourth inning, bringing the tying run to the plate against Wichita starter Ryan Hinson. Cristian Guerrero led off the frame with a single to right. Brian Kolb posted a one out double down the left field line, scoring a Guerrero from first. Kolb scored from third with two outs when Mike Valadez dropped a single into right on a 3-2 offering.

Two more runs crossed in the sixth as the RailCats pulled within a run at 5-4. Mike Rohde and Valadez led off with singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Carrara. Adam Klein knocked home a run with a ground out before Mike Massaro tripled into the right field corner. The triple was the 13th of the year for Massaro, already a RailCat single season record, the number is now tied for the American Association single season mark.

Hinson was denied in his attempt to become the single season leader for victories in Wichita history as against the bullpen in the seventh the RailCats completed the comeback, taking the lead for the first time. Toddric Johnson collected a one-out single and scored from first to tie the score on a double into the right field corner off the bat of Kolb, his second double of the game. With two outs, Carrara roped a single to left, scoring Kolb and handing the RailCats the lead for the first time.

Travis Minix was saddled with the loss, allowing a pair of infield hits in the ninth before Richardson drove a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right for the game-winner. The homer was his 10th of the season.

The RailCats smashed 13 hits in the defeat. Kolb led the charge with a 3-for-5 showing with two runs scored and two RBIs. Massaro, Guerrero, Rohde, and Valadez posted two hits each.

The series continues tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. with LHP Trent Lare (3-4, 6.06), who was picked up in a trade with Kansas City earlier this week, making his debut for the RailCats. Wichita counters with RHP Nick Singleton (10-1, 3.22).
