Captains Defeated 9-5 Against Ft. Worth as Gulledge Notches Four Hits

SHREVEPORT, La.---Ft. Worth catcher Kelley Gulledge led the charge against Shreveport-Bossier with a four-hit night as the Cats beat the Captains in the opening game of the Captains final homestand of the year, 9-5 at Fair Grounds Field Friday night.

Gulledge was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles and a homerun as the Cats moved ahead of the Captains by a game in the American Association wild card race. Shreveport-Bossier currently trails Wichita by 7.5 games with 11 remaining.

Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (L, 9-5) allowed seven earned runs and nine hits in 2.2 innings, his shortest outing of the year.

Shreveport-Bossier got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Robert Perry tripled and scored on a Bryan Sabatella groundout. But Ft. Worth would counter with three in the second and four in the third to go up 7-1.

Gulledge led off the second with a double and scored on Trent Lockwood's base hit to tie the game. With two outs, third baseman Will Calhoun would knock in Lockwood and Cory Morales with a base hit to give the Cats the lead. Calhoun went 3-for-6 on the night with four RBIs.

In the third Marcos Rodriguez led off with a base hit and Gulledge blasted his 14th home run of the year to left field, putting Ft. Worth up 5-1. Run-scoring singles by Morales and Calhoun would put the Cats up by six.

Perry led off the third by reaching on a walk. He then stole second for his team-leading 29th steal of the year and scored on Sabatella's single. Palmer Karr Jr. then singled and, after a Chad Gabriel double play groundout, scored on Andres Rodriguez's two-out base hit.

Calhoun hit an RBI double off Lee Henry in the sixth and then scored on Gulledge's second double of the game to make it 9-3 Ft. Worth. The Captains would get to within four in the sixth on a Mike Provencher RBI sinlge and a Sabatella sacrifice fly. However, Shreveport-Bossier would leave one runner on base in each of the final three innings and left 11 for the game.

Ft. Worth starter Tyler Seaman went three innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out none. Griffin Bailey (W, 1-3) earned his first win of the year going 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.

Sabatella was 1-for-3 with three RBIs in the loss. Shortstop Jonathan Johnson was 2-for-3 with a triple, walk and a run scored. Perry went 1-for-3 with two runs, a triple, two walks and a stolen base. Lee Henry allowed two runs on one hit in three innings of relief. Jose Velazquez and Hector Carrasco combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings.

With the loss, the Captains fall to 41-48 and 24-19 at Fair Grounds Field. The series continues Saturday, Aug. 20 when the Captains send Josh Strawn (2-2, 4.29) to the mound against Ft. Worth's Phillip Bartleski (4-2, 4.26) on LA Lottery & 98 Rocks Shirt Off Our Backs Night where fans can enter a raffle to win game-worn Captains jerseys. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
