Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release

Wisconsin Rapids, WI-. Justin Peters threw six innings, and Wisconsin Rapids scattered 10 hits throughout the evening, but the Rafters left 13 runners on base to drop their third-straight ballgame to the Madison Mallards, 4-3. The one-run loss was just the second of the year for the Rafters as the loss drops their record to 5-10 on the season.

Donnie Dewees added his first home run of the year, and Texas product, Taylor Stell, continued his tear on the base path as he reached for the fifteenth straight ballgame, while extending his hitting streak to a staggering seven games.

The first runs of the game would come in the top of the second inning when Mallards right fielder, Drew Weeks, led the inning off with a single up the middle, and Tate Matheny added a two-run home run, as he launched a ball just over the left field wall. The home run by Matheny was his third of the season and gave the Mallards the lead, 2-0.

Madison added to the lead in the second as Mike Reuvekamp reached on a hit-by-pitch, and Erik Forgione was awarded first on an infield single that gave the Mallards runners at first and third with nobody out. The infield single was part of a three-hit night by the shortstop that included a solo home run in the fifth. Revekamp would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Topeka, Kansas native, Eric Cheray.

The Rafters would make it interesting as they added eight hits throughout the final six innings of the ballgame. Wisconsin Rapids first runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Stell led off with a hard-hit single to left field, while Dewees launched a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for his first RBI as a Rafter. The two-run home run drew the game closer, 3-2.

Madison would hold on, through a flurry of Rafters rallies, as they used four pitchers throughout the final five innings of play to hold on to the lead. In the final five frames the Rafters stranded seven runners of base, including the bases loaded in the ninth inning with one out.

The Rafters will leave the friendly confines of Witter Field as they travel to Wausau, WI for the second time this season to face the Wisconsin Woodchucks. The Woodchucks are the only team this season that the Rafters have claimed a winning record over as they have taken the first two games of the eight games this season between the two.

Fans can listen to tomorrow's broadcast by tuning into WFHR AM 1320 as Aaron Berlin broadcasts the game live from Athletic Park.
