Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Wednesday night offense was the story from Athletic Park in Wausau. Thursday it was the pitchers turn to steal the show. David Lucroy (East Carolina University) and three relievers held the Wisconsin Woodchucks to just two hits in a 4-1 victory.
In 6 1/3 innings of work the only hit surrendered by Lucroy was a one-out single in the second inning. The only run of the game for the Woodchucks came across when shortstop Sawyer Polen (Kent State University) threw the ball away allowing Jimmy Correnti to score in the fifth. The only other real threat came in the seventh when the 'Chucks put two runners on base thanks to an error and a walk. Relievers Luke Lowery (Southern Mississippi) and Donnie Hissa (University of Notre Dame) combined to get out of the jam. Karch Kowalczyk (Valparaiso University) came in and closed the door in the ninth to seal a third consecutive victory.
Offensively, the Lakeshore Chinooks picked up eight more hits. Three different players had a multi-hit game. The first run of the game came when Polen drove in Milel Mucha (Wichita State University) on a sacrifice fly after Mucha moved up on an error by the third baseman.
Lakeshore regained the lead in the seventh when the first two runners reached by way of a walk. Mucha scored on a wild pitch and Cody Bobbitt (Wichita State) touched home on an RBI ground out from Polen to make it 3-1 Chinooks. They added one more for good measure in the eighth on an RBI single from Aaron Machbitz (South Dakota State University) scoring Ryan Krill (Michigan State University) from third.
The win puts the Chinooks in a tie for first place with defending Northwoods League champion La Crosse at 10-6 in the Southern Division. The two teams hold a half game lead on the Battle Creek Bombers who will be in Mequon for a three-game set this weekend. First pitch Friday is set for 7:05.
