
St. Cloud Rox Roll Over Thunder Bay, 24-12

Thunder Bay, Ontario - The St. Cloud Rox and the Thunder Bay Border Cats played their third and final game of the series Thursday morning as the Rox defeated the Border Cats 24-12.
Tim Colwell (Jr., North Dakota State University) kicked it off in the top of the first for the Rox hitting a single and advanced to second as Daniel Comstock (Fr., Menlo College) grounded out to short. With two outs on the board, Adam Martin (Jr., Western Carolina University) hit a single scoring Colwell for a 1-0 lead. It was an inning of singles as Charlie Morgan (Jr., Wake Forest University), Conor Keniry (Jr., Wake Forest University), Dustin Breshears (So., St. John's University NY) and Blake Headley (So., University of Nebraska) all hit singles with two outs on the board making it a 4-0 game. Garrett Fischer (R-Jr., St. Cloud State University) brought in the final two run of the inning as he reached on an error by the third baseman putting the Rox up 6-0.
Thunder Bay would score two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Tyler Duplantis hit a two run home run making it a 6-2 game going into the second inning.
Tim Colwell led off for St. Cloud in the top of the second hitting another single and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Martin also hit another single and was followed by Morgan as he hit a sacrifice fly out to center field scoring Colwell and extending the lead 7-2.
In the top of the third inning it was another great inning for the Rox as they kept the bats going. Breshears led off with a single to get it going right away in the inning. Headley and Fischer followed with singles loading the bases before the Border Cats had a pitching substitution.
Chris Paul (So., University of California) moved the game to 9-2 as he hit a single scoring Breshears. Colwell would then reach on a fielder's choice, as Paul was putout first base to short stop. The Rox were again on the board with two outs as Martin was up to bat hitting the first double for St. Cloud taking a 10-2 lead after the top of the third inning.
The Rox held Thunder Bay to no runs in the bottom of the third to keep their large lead.
Breshears ripped a double to get things going for the Rox in the top of the fourth as Headley followed with a single. Fischer was then up to bat reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Breshears and Headley advanced on an error. Chris Paul loaded the bases off a single for St. Cloud and they all advanced as Colwell grounded out to second making it a 12-2 game.
The fifth inning was the first scoreless inning for the Rox as Thunder Bay was able to get two runs off a two singles making it a 12-4 game.
Chris Paul was able to keep the Rox alive in the top of the sixth hitting a single as they had two outs on the board. Colwell followed hitting a single and Comstock earned the walk to load the bases. Martin reached on an error by the third baseman scoring Paul and Colwell taking a 14-4 lead over the Border Cats. Alex McRae (So., Jacksonville University), starting pitcher for the Rox came into the game pinch hitting for Morgan making great contact for a double moving it to 15-4. Before Thunder Bay could make a pitching change Keniry hit a single to score Martin and McRae to take the game into the bottom of the sixth inning leading 17-4.
The Rox pitching got into trouble walking three guys and hitting one with a pitch to allow the Border Cats to score a run making it a 17-5 game. A wild pitch would move Thunder Bay to trail 17-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Border Cats would end the inning to trail the Rox 17-8 with their final run scored off a single.
Leading off for the Rox in the seventh inning Headley hit a single and then advanced to second on an error by the short stop. On a 3-2 count Garrett Fischer slams a single to score Headley for an 18-8 lead. The Rox' first baseman Chris Paul got a piece of the ball and put it over the fence for a two run home run taking the Rox to a 20-8 lead over Thunder Bay.
The Border Cats again earned a couple walks and a hit by a pitch to load the bases and a single followed to bring in two runs making it a 20-10 game. A wild pitch from the Rox pitcher Kasey Ralston (Fr., Indiana University) would bring in another run for the Border Cats with one out on the board.
St. Cloud would pull two more runs in the top of the eighth with runners on first and second Garrett Fischer hit a single to make it 22-11.
Border Cats would then score again in the bottom of the eight to trail 22-12. The Rox would continue to extend their lead in the top of the ninth as they scored another two runs to score 24 runs in the game.
St. Cloud now holds the Northwoods League season 2013 season record for most runs in a game that was previously set at 18 this season.
Earning the win on the mound for the Rox was Alex McRae moving his record to 2-0 on the season. Also seeing action in the game was David Yakopec (So., University of Pittsburgh), Kasey Ralston, and John Oltman (R-Fr., Creighton University).
The Rox (8-8, 8-8 North) will be back in action on Friday, June 14 as they head to Willmar, Minnesota to take on the Willmar Stingers. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Bill Taunton Stadium.
St. Cloud will be back at Joe Faber Field June 15-16 as they host the Willmar Stingers. Game times are slated for 6:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. respectively. Saturday will be a Baseball Glove Giveaway presented by Central Minnesota Credit Union with the first 250 kids 12 and under receiving the giveaway. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. so show up early and play catch on the field from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
It will also be "Ultimate Saturdays" where if you bring your ticket to the Ultimate Sports Bar & Grill after Saturday's home game you will receive a buy one, get one free drink of your choice (only redeemable the night of the game). Ultimate Sports Bar & Grill is located at 1101 Division St. in Waite Park.
The Rox' Sunday's game will be a Father's Day and Men's Health Day presented by Adult & Pediatric Urology. The first 250 kids 12 and under will receive a blue baseball. There will also be a player jersey auction with all proceeds benefiting Men's Health. Coborn's Kids' Day is on Sunday as kids will have the opportunity to run the bases and get autographs on the field after the game.
