Thunder Bay Border Cats News Release
It was a good night for the Border Cats as they snapped a three game home losing skid with a 5-2 victory over the St. Cloud Rox Wednesday at Subway Field. The Cats banged out 11 hits as they improved their record to 7-8. Thunder Bay starter Chris Kerwood (Arkansas State University) upped his record to 2-0 as he turned in a solid performance on the mound. The righthander pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Kerwood walked two and struck out one. Zach Thiac (Nicholls State University) threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout and Jordan Church (Sam Houston State University) pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for his first save.
The Cats grabbed a 4-0 lead thanks to a two-run 2nd inning and a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th. Jason Vosler (Northeastern University) once again led the Cats offensively as he went 2-4 with double, triple, and two runs scored. The third baseman circled the bases on his triple in the 7th inning as his line drive down the right field line bounced off the tarp in foul territory and rolled all the way to the wall. Vosler was held up at third base, but scored when St. Cloud right fielder Garrett Fischer overthrew the cut-off man, allowing him to race home on the throwing error. Ty Stetson (Murray State University) had an RBI triple and scored once and Cory Kay (Harper College) Dylan Becker (Missouri State University) and Jacob Rogers all added two hits apiece.
The Cats and Rox play the rubber game of their three-game series today with a school day game starting at 11:05am. Clint Knoblauch (Florida Gulf Coast University) will get the start for the Cats. The righthander has started two games and is 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA.
CLAW MARKS: The injury bug has hit two of the Cats top hitters as Ryan Casillas (Southern Illinois University) and Michael Foster (Northeastern University) will both be out the lineup for an extended period of time. Casillas will return to his home in Chandler, AZ., to have further tests on his injured left wrist. There is a slight chance the first baseman will be able to return to Thunder Bay before the end of the season. Casillas has played in five games and is batting .333 with one home run and a team leading 10 runs batted in. Foster is battling a sore right shoulder and may miss up to two weeks. The native of Pickering, ON., has hit .343 in nine games with one home run and four RBI's. The second baseman/pitcher has also recorded three saves in three opportunites. The Cats plan to have second baseman Philip Lyons (Nicholls State University) join the club on the road this weekend. Lyons played in 64 games for the Cats last season and batted .294 with one home run, 27 runs batted in, and a team leading 29 stolen bases.
