Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers dropped the final game of a three-game series with the Waterloo Bucks as they were defeated 5-3 on Thursday at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.
Waterloo got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when John Ziznewski delivered a two-out RBI single to score Chesny Young from second base. The run was the first earned run allowed this season by Honkers starting pitcher Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State.)
Rochester bounced back quickly as Connor Goedert (Neosho County Community College) reached base with a one-out single and came around to score on a two-out single from Reid Roper (Illinois) to tie the game at 2-2.
The score remained even until the bottom of the sixth inning when Spitzack allowed a leadoff single to Jake Mahon. Mahon would later score on a double from Kyle Pollack to give the Bucks a 2-1 lead after six innings. Spitzack allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings. Alex Tenorio (Menlo College) finished the sixth inning, he allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
Alex Greer (Iowa Western) started the top of the eighth inning with a single. He advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sharp single to center field off the bat of Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) to tie the game at 2-2.
Waterloo responded with three runs off of Rochester relief pitcher Stephen Paladino (Felician College.) The three runs, just one earned, were enough to give Paladino his first loss (0-1) of the season. The Honkers mounted a rally of their own in the top of the ninth inning when Roper reached on an error, Tucker Tharp (Kansas) singled, and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Greer. Greer hit a fly ball to center field that was trapped by the Bucks center fielder Marcos Calderon, but Burgess was thrown out on the play for the second out of the inning. Aaron Rhodes picked up the win for Waterloo as he struck out Tyler Baker (Wichita State) to end the game, leaving the tying runner on base. Rhodes allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in two innings of relief.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) led the Honkers offense with two hits each.
Rochester (7-9) will return home to Mayo Field on Friday, June 14 as they will host the Thunder Bay Border Cats (7-9) at 7:05 p.m. to begin a four-game home stand. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is slated to make his first start of the season for the Honkers, while John Hayes (Murray State) is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the visiting Border Cats.
