Manchester Monarchs News Release

NEW YORK, NY - Los Angeles Kings and former Manchester Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Quick was named the NHL's First Star for the week ending on February 8. Detroit Red Wings right wing Marian Hossa and Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green took the second and third star honors, respectively, in this week's NHL Three Stars.

FIRST STAR -- JONATHAN QUICK, G, LOS ANGELES KINGS

Quick stopped 95-of-100 shots in posting three consecutive road victories, lifting the Kings (23-21-7, 53 points) within three points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. He stopped 29 shots in recording his third shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory at Ottawa on February 3, made 41 saves in a 5-4 victory at Washington on February 5 and concluded the week by making 25 stops in a 3-1 victory at New Jersey on February 7. The 23-year-old Milford, Connecticut native improved his season record to 10-6-0 with a 2.38 goals-against-average and .920 save-percentage in 18 games. He ranks third among NHL rookie goaltenders in victories behind Steve Mason of Columbus (19) and Pekka Rinne of Nashville (14).

At the time of his recall from Manchester on December 16, Quick led the Monarchs in games played (14), minutes (827), goals-against-average (2.68) and save-percentage (.919). He was also tied for the team lead (with goaltender Jonathan Bernier) with six wins and had an overall record of 6-5-2. Among AHL leaders, Quick ranked 11th overall in save -percentage and 20th overall in goals-against-average, while among rookies he ranked second in save-percentage and fourth in goals-against-average. The 6-foot-1, 216-pounder from Milford, Connecticut, made his Kings/NHL debut last season and played in three games, recording a 1-2-0 record, a 3.84 goals-against-average and a .855 save percentage. He recorded his first NHL win on December 6, 2007, against Buffalo.

Quick also last season played in 19 regular season games with the Monarchs -- and posted an 11-8-0 record, a 2.32 goals-against-average, a .922 save percentage and three shutouts, plus one playoff contest - and in 38 regular season games with Reading of the ECHL he was 23-11-3, with his 23 wins the seventh most in that league. He also scored a goal while playing with the Royals.

SECOND STAR -- MARIAN HOSSA, RW, DETROIT RED WINGS

Hossa shared the NHL scoring lead last week with seven points (six goals, one assist), helping the Red Wings (35-11-7, 77 points) post four consecutive victories and move within two points of the first-place San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference standings. He notched a pair of goals in a 4-3 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues on February 2, scored two more in a 5-4 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on February 4 and tallied the game-winning goal and one assist in an 8-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on February 7. Hossa closed the week by reaching the 30-goal mark for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, scoring a key third-period insurance goal in a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 8.

THIRD STAR -- MIKE GREEN, D, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Green earned Third Star honors for the second consecutive week after posting seven points (four goals, three assists) and becoming the first NHL defenseman in nearly 25 years to score a goal in six consecutive games. He notched one goal and one assist in a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on February 3, tallied another one-goal, one-assist effort in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on February 5 and concluded the week with two goals and one assist in a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers on February 7. Green's current six-game goal-scoring streak is the longest by an NHL defenseman since Ray Bourque's six-game streak for Boston in March, 1984 and is one shy of the League record for blueliners set by the Bruins' Mike O'Connell in January, 1984. Green's 19 goals and 47 points lead all defensemen this season.

Manchester continues their five game homestand when the Springfield Falcons come to town on Wednesday, February 11 for a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
