Last Week's Games

Wednesday, February 4th - Grand Rapids Griffins 3 at Quad City Flames 2

Grand Rapids completed their sweep of the season series with Quad City by topping the Flames 3-2 on Wednesday at the i wireless Center. The Flames established a new franchise record for shots on goal with 46, but only Brett Sutter and Jamie Lundmark managed to beat Griffins netminder Jimmy Howard. Darren Haydar scored twice in the opening frame to open up a 2-0 lead for the Griffins after 20 minutes. Haydar scored at even strength with three minutes gone in the game. He added a power-play marker when he tipped home a Garrett Stafford centering pass at 10:36 of the period. Haydar's pair of tallies staked the Griffins to a lead despite a Flames attack that generated 17 shots in the opening period.

The Flames tied the game thanks to a pair of second period markers. Brett Sutter tipped home a John Armstrong shot just :39 seconds into the period. Jamie Lundmark followed with his 13th goal of the season at 15:49 of the frame. Lundmark scored off the rebound from a Kyle Greentree chance. The Flames leading scorer slithered a shot from an off angle past Grand Rapid's Jimmy Howard. The scored remained knotted at two as the teams broke for the second intermission. The Griffins scored the only goal of the third period when Evan McGrath created a turnover and fed Francis Lemieux for his ninth goal of the year. The tally came with 5:24 left in regulation and stood up as the game-winning tally.

Friday, February 6th - Peoria Rivermen 3 at Quad City Flames 2

The I-74 Rivalry renewed on Friday after a 61 day lay-off. A late goal by Steve Regier provided the Rivermen with a 3-2 win as Peoria improved to 5-1-0-0 on the season vs. Quad City. Jamie Lundmark and Kyle Greentree scored for the Flames in the loss. With his first period tally, Lundmark extended his scoring streak to five games. The teams exchanged first period goals as Eric Neilson netted his second goal of the season vs. Quad City followed by a Jamie Lundmark tally. Neilson hopped behind the Quad City defense and scored on a late developing breakaway to give the Rivermen a 1-0 edge at 12:47 of the first period. The Flames responded less than two minutes later. At 14:27 of the period, Kyle Greentree found Jamie Lundmark in front during a Flames power play. The goal extended Lundmark's scoring streak to five games and tied the game at one.

The teams skated scoreless through a defensive second period. The team combined for just 12 shots in the middle frame, and the Rivermen failed to convert on the period's only power play. After continuing to skate scoreless through the first half of the third period, the teams picked up the offensive pace late in the frame. Kyle Greentree started the scoring when he sent a perfect shot over Ben Bishop shoulder from just outside the Peoria crease during a 5-on-3 power play. The marker gave the Flames the lead for the first time at 2-1. The Rivermen answered just three and a half minutes later when Nicholas Drazenovic scored after Peoria hemmed in the Flames in their own end for several seconds. The Rivermen netted the game-winning goal with just 1:29 left in the game when Anders Eriksson had a pass picked off by Steve Regier. The Peoria power forward beat Leland Irving from the high slot to put the Rivermen back in front. It was Regier's sixth goal in six games vs. the Flames and it held up as the game-winning tally.

Saturday, February 7th - Houston Aeros 2 at Quad City Flames 3 Shootout

The Flames recorded their shootout win of the year on Saturday night with a 3-2 triumph over Houston. John Armstrong and Kyle Greentree scored the regulation goals while Carsen Germyn and David Van der Gulik added shootout tallies. Netminder Leland Irving stopped all four shooters he faced in the extra session. John Armstrong netted the only goal of the opening period when he capped an end-to-end rush by sliding the puck through the five hole of Houston netminder Nolan Schaefer. The goal was Armstrong's third tally of the season and staked Quad City to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The teams exchanged middle period markers. Kyle Greentree established a new career high with his 25th goal of the season during a Flames power-play at 10:29 of the period. Carsen Germyn found Greentree with a cross-ice pass to set up a one-timer. The Aeros sliced the Flames lead in half four minutes later when Krys Kolanos scored on a goal-mouth scramble during a stretch of 4-on-4 hockey. The period ended with the Flames holding a 2-1 edge.

The Aeros tied the game when Kolanos scored the only goal of the third period during an Aeros man advantage. Kolanos sent a shot from the high slot through traffic. Leland Irving was able to deflect the puck but couldn't stop it from trickling over the goalline for Kolanos' second goal of the night. The teams skated scoreless through the remainder of the third period and the overtime session. In the shootout, Irving stopped all four shooters he faced to earn his first shootout victory. Carsen Germyn and David Van der Gulik supplied the shootout offense as the Flames earned their 18th win of the year and their first shootout victory.
