Providence Bruins Fall to the Monarch's 3-2

Providence, R.I. - The Providence Bruins defeated the Norfolk Admirals tonight in overtime by a final score of 2-1. The P-Bruins received goals from Chris Casto and Zach Trotman. Malcolm Subban made 23 saves.

In the first period, the P-Bruins came out to a strong and fast start. The game grew physical and intense early; however, the majority of great scoring opportunities went to the P-Bruins. Subban also proved to be ready early making some great saves throughout the period when his team needed him the most. The best chance of the opening frame happened when Craig Cunningham shot the puck towards the front of the Admirals' goal. The puck rebounded off Admirals' goaltender Brad Thiessen and out to Cunningham's stick. Cunningham tried to bounce in the rebound, but the puck deflected wide off the net. The conference rivals continued to play a hard fought game, but neither team was able to score going into the first intermission.

During the second period, the P-Bruins and Admirals continued to play an up-tempo game. Although the Admirals managed to stop much of the P-Bruins' offensive attack, the P-Bruins found a way to breakout in the latter half of the middle frame. Andrew Cherniwchan had the best chance of the period for the P-Bruins when he was able to find room through Admirals defenders to go on a breakaway which started just beneath Norfolk's defensive blue line. However, the Admirals' took the 1-0 lead at the 16:05 mark. William Karlsson skated through the P-Bruins defensive attack alongside eventual assist markers, Emerson Etem and Andre Petersson. Karlsson got his stick on a bouncing puck that went just pass Subban for his first goal of the season. The game went into the second intermission with the Admirals up 1-0.

In the third period, the teams traded quality scoring chances in the early going. At the 10:07 mark, the P-Bruins managed to light up the scoreboard with the tying goal. Casto gained control of the puck and took a hard wrist shot from center ice that sailed cleanly pass Thiessen. It was Casto's third goal this season while Mike Moore and Ben Sexton were awarded the assists. From that point on, the P-Bruins took control of the contest with a solid offensive game. Although the P-Bruins gained momentum as the clock wound down, the games stay tied at one apiece and was forced into overtime.

The P-Bruins took home the decisive two points in overtime. Cherniwchan took hold of the puck after battling an Admirals defender and was able to skate up the left wing shooting the puck towards the five-hole of Thiessen. Trying to earn a goal, the puck trickled out towards the left side of the net. Trotman skated his way in and found the puck, slipping it in the left side of the net for his seventh goal this season at the 3:16 mark. The P-Bruins earned the 2-1 victory.

Providence was 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Subban stopped 23 of 24 shots while counterpart Thiessen made 45 saves.

The Providence Bruins will travel to Albany to take on the Devils on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The P-Bruins skate back to the Dunkin' Donuts Center this Sunday when they face the Manchester Monarchs at 3:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Team Poster courtesy of University Orthopedics.
