
Monsters Top Rochester 2-1 in a Shootout

Guillaume Desbiens broke a tie in the 10th round of the shootout to lift the Lake Erie Monsters (30-32-1-10) to a 2-1 shootout win over the Rochester Americans (35-27-6-5) Sunday evening at Quicken Loans Arena. The victory snapped a five-game winless skid for the Monsters, who have played past regulation in three straight games and 20 times overall on the season. Andrew Agozzino scored the lone goal for the Monsters, who conclude a four-game homestand Tuesday at 7:00 PM against Hamilton.
Nick Crawford opened the scoring on the power play for Rochester at 7:23 of the first period on a shot from the top of the left circle, making the score 1-0 for the Americans. Andrew Agozzino evened the game at 18:03 of the first period on a rebound from the right circle, his 15th goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1. The goal was a power play tally, and was assisted by Karl Stollery and Mark Olver.
After the first period, there was no scoring in the game. The Monsters outshot Rochester 19-5 in the third period, and after overtime held a 42-23 edge in the shots on net. The shootout portion lasted 10 rounds before the Monsters secured the victory, scoring three times to the Americans two shootout goals. Joey Hishon, Colin Smith, and Desbiens scored in the shootout, while Joel Armia and Kevin Porter scored in the shootout for Rochester.
Sami Aittokallio stopped 22 of 23 shots in the game and eight of 10 shootout attempts; his record is now 14-15-3. Mark Guggenberger stopped 41 of 42 Monsters shots and seven of 10 shootout attempts; his record in the American Hockey League this season is 0-0-1.
The Monsters host Hamilton Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
