IceCaps Hand out Awards at Regular Season Finale
April 13, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps announced their 2013-14 end-of-season awards prior to Sunday's home finale against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Taking home the Most Valuable Player award was centre Andrew Gordon. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native currently leads the IceCaps in points with 56 and has been one of the team's most consistent players throughout the season, skating in all 73 games so far. He ranks second in goals (23) and tied for first in power play goals (10) and power play points (22). Top Defenceman honours went to Ben Chiarot. The native of Hamilton, Ontario currently leads the IceCaps with a plus-24 plus/minus rating and his solid defensive play earned him multiple call-ups to the Winnipeg Jets.
Top Rookie went to defenceman Brenden Kichton. The Spruce Grove, Alberta native leads all rookie defencemen in scoring with 46 points, playing in all 73 games to-date, and represented the IceCaps in this year's AHL All-Star Game in St. John's. Kichton was recognized for his excellence as a freshman last week when he was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team.
The IceCaps' Statoil Community Man of the Year was once again awarded to team captain Jason Jaffray. The IceCaps take pride in being part of the community and the Rimbey, Alberta native led the charge all season. From school appearances to hospital and recreation centre visits, Jaffray was front and centre for the organization. Finally, the Fans Choice Award went to John Albert, who collected the most votes in a contest held on the IceCaps' Facebook page. A gritty, high-energy player, Albert inspired his teammates both on-and-off the ice. The Cleveland, Ohio native missed most of last season with a series of injuries but bounced back this year to have his best season as a professional. He currently ranks tied for first on the team in goals (24) and leads the AHL in shorthanded tallies (6).
After Sunday's contest, the IceCaps head on the road for their final two games of the 2013-14 regular season, next weekend in Worcester and Portland. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com, 930 AM and AHL Live.
