October 6, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, entering their 19th season in the American Hockey League, today announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have assigned defenseman Matt Bartkowski to Providence and reassigned goaltender Adam Courchaine from Providence to the ECHL's Reading Royals.
Barkowski, 22, enters his first professional season following two years with the Ohio State University Buckeyes, where he scored 38 points (11g, 27a) in 80 games. As a sophomore, he was an All-CCHA Honorable Mention, OSU Scholar Athlete and Academic All Big Ten choice before signing with Boston on April 29. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native was acquired by Boston on March 3 in a trade with the Florida Panthers along with Dennis Seidenberg for former P-Bruins Byron Bitz, Craig Weller and a 2010 second round draft pick. Barkowski was selected by Florida 190th overall in round seven of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He remains with the parent Bruins in Prague and will join the P-Bruins upon the club's return to North America.
Courchaine, 21, heads to Reading to begin his first full professional season after two brief stints in Providence late in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns. The Kanata, Ontario, native split the 2009-10 season between the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters and Sarnia Sting, compiling a 20-24-1 overall record in 48 games. Courchaine also registered six shutouts, a 3.24 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. The goalie later went 0-2 in the postseason for the Otters with a 4.50 GAA and .886 save percentage. Courchaine appeared in one preseason game for Providence this year, stopping seven of 11 shots in 29:34 in a 4-3 loss to the Springfield Falcons on October 2.
With the moves, the P-Bruins' roster remains at 25 players, including 14 forwards, nine defensemen and two goaltenders.
Training camp runs through Thursday, October 7, with all sessions to be held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Please note that training camp is not open to the public.
Providence opens the regular season at The Dunk this Friday, October 8 at 7:05 p.m. against Springfield. P-Bruins ticket packages and individual game tickets are on sale now for the 2010-11 season.
