BILOXI, MS - Mississippi's Jeff Hutchins scored two goals and Steffon Walby added three assists as the Sea Wolves defeated the Florence Pride 3-2 Tuesday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Mississippi took a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the game, scoring on its first shot on goal. Walby found Hutchins open behind the Pride net. Hutchins skated out at the near post, and his quick wrap-around shot caught Matt Underhill leaning the wrong way, putting the puck in net for his 23rd of the season.
Florence came back to tie the game at the 7:48 mark. Wes Goldie pushed the puck ahead to Kyle Kidney skating into the Mississippi zone. Kidney was able to get around two SeaWolf defenders, and roof a shot over goaltender Greg Gardner for his ninth goal of the season, and his fifth point in the last three games.
The Pride took their first lead of the night, scoring a power play goal at the 9:32 mark of the second period. Vladimir Gusev started the play, keeping in a clearing attempt at the left point. The puck wound up in front of the net where Eric Naud was stonewalled by Garnder, but Kidney on the backdoor was able to tip it in for his second of the night, the second time in three games he has scored two goals.
But, the SeaWolves tied it before the peiord ended. With Jeff Szwez in the box for cross-checking, the Wolves put constant pressure on Underhill. Just after the penalty expired, Steffon Walby fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Sergei Kuznetsov on the far post who put it into the net for his 13th of the season.
Mississippi got the game-winner at the 10:58 mark of the third. Walby fed Hutchins coming in behind the Pride defense. He deked Underhill and tucked the puck in on the near post for his second of the game.
Walby was a part of all eight goals scored by Mississippi against Florence this season, tallying one goal and eight assists.
Florence's five-game road trip rolls on Friday night as the Pride head to Beaumont, Texas for the first of back-to-back games with the Texas Wildcatters. Face off both nights is slated for 8:00 p.m. ET. All of the action on WDAR Sunny 105.5 and www.florencepride.com starts with the Palmetto Chiropractic Pre-Game Show at 7:40.
