Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Charlotte, North Carolina â Tuesday, February 3 ) The Charlotte Checkers continued to respond to new Head Coach Derek Wilkinson, chalking up another impressive victory in a 6-1 triumph over the South Carolina Stingrays Tuesday night at Cricket Arena. Mike Wirll scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night while Richard Keyes had a three-point night of his own with a goal and two assists. Doug Christiansen, Dusty Jamieson, and Mike Hartman scored single goals for the Checkers, with Allan Egeland and Rory Rawlyk chipping in two assists each. Scott Meyer made 23 assists to pick up the win in net, as Charlotte avenged one of their worst performances just a week earlier in a 3-1 loss to the Stingrays on January 27.
"Our guys really had some momentum tonight," commented Checkers Coach Derek Wilkinson. "We got off to a good start tonight and when our goalies get a lead they are hard to beat. Our power play is vastly improved and the guys are feeding off what we've been doing the past four games."
Charlotte jumped off to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Christiansen and Wirll while outshooting the Stingrays 15-6. In the second period the Checkers sandwiched two goals around a lone tally for South Carolina for a 4-1 advantage after two periods. Jamieson beat Stingrays goalie Kirk Daubenspeck at 11:30 for a 3-0 Checkers lead. Marty Clapton scored for the Stingrays a minute later to cut the Checkers lead to 3-1. But Wirll's second goal at 14:48 gave the Checkers their three-goal lead right back at 4-1.
Charlotte scored a pair of goals in the third period to ice the win, as Keyes and Hartman lit the lamp for the 6-1 final. The Checkers record improved to 22-18-6 for 50 points and jumped into sole possession of fifth place in the Southern Division just two points behind fourth place South Carolina. The Stingrays saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with the loss as their record fell to 25-15-2 for 52 points. The Checkers continue their four-game week Thursday night in Gwinnett where they'll battle the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. Charlotte returns to Cricket Arena Saturday night to host the Roanoke Express at 7:30 p.m.
