Pride drop first pre-season contest

COLUMBIA, SC - The Columbia Inferno erupted for six goals in the second period en route to a 9-1 win over the Pee Dee Pride on Friday night in the pre-season opener for both teams.

Columbia drew first blood 7:13 into the first period. Pride goaltender Nick Boucher make the initial save on a Matt Ulwelling shot, but the rebound came free in front to Aaron Smith who slipped it over the line.

The Inferno doubled their lead at the 3:25 mark of the second period. Ulwelling took a perfect centering pass from Steve Slaton and one-timed it past Boucher for his second point of the night.

Columbia would make it 3-0 just 1:39 later. Bruce was left all alone in front of the goal, and beat Boucher for his second tally of the night.

Ryan Campbell made it 4-0 Inferno at the 8:53 mark of the middle period, beating Boucher to the five-hole.

The Inferno went up by five at the 12:16 mark of the second as Derek Eastman uncorked a blast from just inside the blue line that beat Boucher to the stick side. Ulwelling earned the assist for his third point of the night.

Just 1:01 later, Columbia made it 6-0. Robin Carruthers gathered in a losse puck at the top of the crease and stuffed it past Boucher.

Columbia added one more score before the second period ended, as Andy Berg netted an unassisted goal with just 24.2 seconds remaining.

Allan Sirois ended the Inferno's shutout bid just 38 seconds into the final period. The Pride verteran gathered in a pass from Kyle Kidney in the left-wing circle, and blistered a slap shot past goaltender Dave Marlin.

Columbia went back up by seven at the 4:39 mark. The initial shot by Ulwelling ricocheted off the end boards and sat free at the edge of te crease. Jim Murphy skated in and slid it past Boucher to make it 8-1.

The Inferno were not done yet, as they made it 9-1 exactly one minute later when Kenny Turano beat Boucher to the short side.

The Pride wrap up their pre-season slate Saturday night, hosting the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30. All Pride full-season-ticket holders receive a free ticket to this game.
