San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls made a few changes to their training camp roster Friday afternoon. Before hitting the road for their preseason game against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, head coach Martin St. Amour announced the signing of rookies Colin Shields and Nikita Korovkin, while also announcing the release of Tyler MacKay.
Shields, 24, begins his professional career with San Diego after playing the previous three seasons at the University of Maine. The 5-foot-11-inch, 176-pounder from Glasgow, Scotland, notched a team-leading 44 points (18g, 26a) and 40 penalty minutes for Maine last season. His best collegiate season came in 2001-02 when he recorded 46 points (29g, 17a) and 39 penalty minutes, on his way to being named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Shields was a sixth round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Shields is a forward and will wear No. 23.
Korovkin, 21, also begins his pro career after playing the last four years in Juniors (Western Hockey League). The 6-foot-2-inch, 198-pound defenseman from Zlatoust Russia played the majority of last season with the WHL's Tri City Americans, accumulating 44 points (14g, 30a) and 80 penalty minutes in 63 games. Korovkin also played two games for the Kamloops Blazers, scoring no points. During is four-year stint in Juniors, he notched 104 points (33g, 71a) and 305 penalty minutes. Korovkin was a also selected by the Flyers, in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He will wear No. 36.
MacKay became expendable when St. Amour elected to go with a one-two goaltending tandem of Mathieu Chouinard and Trevor Koenig. The 5-foot-11-inch, 165-pound native from Deschambault, Saskatchewan came to training camp with good credentials. Last season, his best as a professional, MacKay appeared in 26 games for Wheeling, accumulating a 17-5-2 record with a 2.24 goals-against-average, .921 save percentage and four shutouts.
The Gulls have two preseason games scheduled against the Ice Dogs: Friday at Glacial Gardens Skating Arena in Long Beach at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa (about 17 miles from the San Diego Sports Arena) at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets to Sunday's game will be $7 for general admission and $5 for Gulls season ticket holders. Gulls season ticket holders can purchase their tickets in advance at the Sports Arena Administration Office (please ask for Greg Olmen).
