Power use 14-hit attack in win over Delmarva

Charleston, WV (May 15, 2009) - The West Virginia Power recorded a season high, 14 hits on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park and took an early lead, which they never surrendered in a 5-4 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds.

West Virginia scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. The first four batters of the inning reached safely. Robbie Grossman and Quincy Latimore began the inning with singles before Chase D'Arnaud was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Calvin Anderson singled into left field to score Grossman and Latimore scored on Jeremy Farrell's base hit. Austin McClune reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning, allowing D'Arnaud to score the final run of the frame.

It didn't take the Shorebirds long to answer, as they scored three times to tie the game in the next half inning. The first four batters hit safely. Joe Mahoney started the inning with a single and scored on Elvin Polanco's double. Polanco came in on a two-bagger from Tyler Kolodny, and Kolodny scored after Greg Miclat grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Power scored twice in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Greg Picart ripped a solo homer, his first of the season to plate the first run and Josue Peley scored on Latimore's second single of the night. In the ninth, L.J. Hoes ripped a two out double and scored on Victor Castillo's base hit. Xavier Avery recorded the final out of the game on a fly out to left field with the tying run on third base.

Kyle McPherson (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings and struck out three in a winning effort. Eddie Pena (5) retired the only batter he faced in the ninth inning to secure the save. Rick Zagone (3-3), who entered with a 1.54 ERA, was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits over three and two-thirds.

West Virginia improved to 11-23 after the win, and the Shorebirds fell to 17-14 with the loss. Latimore paced the Power with a 4-for-5 performance. Josue Peley went 3-for-4 with a double and a run and Chase D'Arnaud turned in a 2-for-4 performance, reaching four times in five trips. West Virginia has scored 19 runs on 26 hits over the first two games of the series.

West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Right hander Gabriel Alvarado (1-2, 5.96) will start for the Power and the Shorebirds will counter with left hander Cole McCurry (2-1, 1.08). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
