Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads were edged by the Lake County Captains, 8-7, in a back-and-forth, 12-inning battle before 2,448 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday night. CF David Paisano registered an RBI in his seventh straight ball-game, extending the longest RBI streak of any Crawdad this season, while 2B Erik Morrison extended his hitting streak to 10 games, also a season-high for Hickory.
Lake County (16-17) struck for an early run in the first inning, facing RHP Jake Brigham on the mound for the Crawdads. Brigham ended up going four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in the no-decision. He concluded his start on a high note, striking out the side in the fourth inning.
The Crawdads (17-17) quickly erased the deficit with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. SS Jake Kaase hit a one-out triple and was quickly brought in by a sacrifice fly hit by 2B Erik Morrison, making it 1-1.
After the Captains plated three more on two hits and two errors committed by Hickory in the second inning, C Doug Hogan brought the Crawdads back within a run with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame, minimizing the Captains lead to 4-3 through two.
Lake County pulled back ahead by multiple runs with a tally in the top of the third, but the Crawdads came charging back again in the home half of the inning. Down 5-3, Paisano led the inning off for Hickory with a double, before scoring on Kaase's RBI single. Kaase then moved to second on a base hit by Morrison, and both advanced ninety feet on a two-out walk drawn by 3B Matt West later in the inning. With the bases loaded and two out, LF Jared Bolden grounded a pitch through the right side of the infield to score Kaase and Morrison, capping the three-run frame to put Hickory in the 6-5 lead. The Crawdads added to their lead with a run in the sixth inning, when Paisano batted in 1B Clark Murphy with a single after Murphy hit a double to get on.
With LHP Martin Perez on the mound out of the bullpen, the 7-5 lead remained intact until the seventh inning, when the Captains started chipping away. CF Delvi Cid had one of his four hits to start the inning, as he doubled to right-center field. C Michael Valadez came through with a one-out double in the inning to score Cid and make it a one-run game, 7-6. Perez then navigated through a scoreless eighth inning, but Cid started the ninth with a solo home run to right field to tie the game, 7-7, and force extra frames.
Both bullpens dealt scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th, before Lake County plated a run against RHP Mark Hamburger (1-3, 2.40) in the top of the 12th to move ahead, 8-7. RHP Anillins Martinez (1-0, 0.00), who earned the win, came back out to the mound and retired Kaase to start the bottom of the 12th, before giving way to Captains closer RHP Steve Smith. Smith was able to get Morrison and Bianucci out to earn the save and seal the Captains 8-7 win in 12 innings.
