Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - Eric Surkamp loaded the bases with two walks and a hit in the first inning, but settled down quite nicely after that, at one point retiring 15 Asheville Tourists in a row in a 5-1 Augusta GreenJackets win over the Tourists at McCormick Field on Friday night. Surkamp's ten strikeouts are a new career-high for the lefty.
The GreenJackets struck in the first with four hits in the opening frame, including a Josh Mazzola RBI single to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead. Wendell Fairley drilled a two-out single later in the inning to bring home two more. Ben Woodbury plated another on a fourth-inning groundout to give the Jackets a four-run edge.
Surkamp (2-1) settled down and delivered his most masterful performance of the season, striking out ten in seven scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and three walks and at one point retired 15 straight Tourists in a span ranging from the first to the sixth innings.
Juan Perez hit his second home run in three days to lead off the eighth against Alan DeRatt. The blast to left field gave the Jackets their fifth run of the night.
With the shutout on the line in the ninth, the Tourists answered on Jimmy Cesario's third home run of the year - a solo shot off Chris Wilson - but that would be as close as Asheville would pull. Wilson retired the next three hitters to end the ballgame.
Robinson Fabian (1-3) took the loss for the Tourists, allowing four runs - all earned - on eight hits without a walk and with five strikeouts.
Aaron King (1-2, 5.85) from nearby Newton, NC will get the start on Saturday for the GreenJackets and will face Parker Frazier (0-3, 6.53), a righty in search of his first win of the season. First pitch from McCormick Field is 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Wednesday May 20th to face the Drive for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
