The West Virginia Power beat the Hickory Crawdads 8-6 on Monday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Brandon Cumpton pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits and two runs while winning his sixth straight decision.

The Power tallied the game's first run with a sac fly in the first inning by Dan Grovatt, but the Crawdads tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run by Tomas Telis.

West Virginia regained the lead for good in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Grovatt singled up the middle to plate a pair and give the Power a 3-1 lead.

Hickory would score once in the top of the seventh, but the Power countered with two in the bottom of the inning to gain a 5-2 edge. Rogelio Noris added three runs with his third home run of the season in the eighth to extend the lead to six runs at 8-2. The Crawdads scored four in the top of the ninth to cap the offense against Power reliever Trent Stevenson.

Cumpton (6-3) earned the win to close his strong month of May. The right-hander went 6-0 during the month with an earned run average of 1.18 in six starts. West Virginia pinned the loss on Matt Thompson (2-3), who allowed three runs on five hits over six innings. Stevenson gained his second save with two innings of work.

Grovatt and Noris paced the Power with three runs batted in apiece, while Alejandro Selen drove in four for the Crawdads. Nine of the ten players West Virginia used offensively during the game had a base hit, and Mel Rojas Jr. had the only multi-hit game of the day from either club.

This three game series concludes tomorrow with a Grand Slam School Day. Colton Cain will make the start for the Power, while the Crawdads are slated to send Luke Jackson to the hill. Tuesday's game time is scheduled for 11:05 am.
