Greensboro Overcomes Early Deficit, Beats Legends 9-3

The Greensboro Grasshoppers put together two four-run rallies on their way to a 9-3 win over the Lexington Legends Monday in Greensboro.

The Legends jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ben Orloff led off the game with a double and one out later, Adam Bailey hit his team-leading 11th home run o f the year. Greensboro got one run back on Mark Canha's solo homer in the fourth, his fifth home run of the season.

After the Legends added a run in the fifth on a single by Roberto Pena, an infield out, and an RBI single by Jiovanni Mier, the Grasshoppers took command with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Wilfredo Gimenez reached on an error by Orloff. Noah Perio singled, and Aaron Dudley walked to load the bases. Ryan Fisher followed with a two-run single, and after Canha's single loaded the bases again, James Wooster delivered another two-run single to give Greensboro a 5-3 lead.

The Grasshoppers added four more in the bottom of the eighth. A double by Christian Yelich and a single by Wooster produced one run. Marcell Ozuna walked and Daniel Black doubled, scoring Wooster and sending Ozuna to third. With the Lexington infield playing in, the runners held as Gimenez grounded out to second and Perio lined to second, but a single by Dudley gave Greensboro its last two runs.

Greensboro starter Ryan Varner (1-0) got the win. Legends' starter Ruben Alaniz (2-4) took the loss. Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes with a 7 p.m. game Tuesday at NewBridge Bank Park.
