Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - Three Savannah pitchers held the Charleston RiverDogs to one run on six hits to propel the Gnats to a 3-1 win on Memorial Day Monday in front of 1,313 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (27-23) have now won eight of their last nine games and are 19-9 in May.

The Gnats did all of their scoring in a three-run fourth inning. With runners at the corners and one out, 1B Sam Honeck bounced a ball up the middle that was deflected by Charleston starter Shane Greene before rolling harmlessly on the left side of the diamond, allowing RF Rafael Fernandez to score for a 1-0 Gnats' lead. An error on Charleston SS Jose Mojica loaded the bases for CF Darrell Ceciliani, who capitalized by grounding a single through the right side driving home two runs to put the Gnats up 3-0.

Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen worked around baserunners in each of the first five innings, but managed to keep the RiverDogs (22-29) off the scoreboard the whole time. His first and only 1-2-3 inning was the sixth, when he struck a batter out, and induced a pair of grounders to Wilfredo Tovar at second. Attempting to finish the seventh inning for the fourth time in five starts, Germen gave up a two-out solo home run to RiverDogs' catcher Jeff Farnham to make the score 3-1.

Adam Kolarek, making his Savannah debut, relieved Germen and finished the seventh before running into trouble in the eighth. A walk, a single and a smash to third put runners at second and third with one out in the eighth. With the tying run at second, the Gnats called on LHP Hamilton Bennett who struck out 1B Kyle Roller and forced a ground out from 3B Rob Segedin to end the threat. Bennett worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of 2011. Germen earned his fourth win of 2011 for his 6.2 innings of one-run ball.

The Gnats will try to complete the sweep Tuesday, when they send RHP Greg Peavey (4-2, 3.17) to the hill against Charleston LHP Nik Turley (2-4, 3.51). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates will open at 6 pm. The broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6:50 pm.
