Hagerstown Suns News Release
Kannapolis, NC-A barrage of offense for the Hagerstown Suns (31-18) in collaboration with solid starting pitching and poor control from the Kannapolis Intimidators (25-22) arms corps led to a Suns 10-5 victory in the series opener at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday evening.
Hagerstown LHP Matt Grace (5-4), the winning pitcher, went a season-long 7.0 innings, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits, while walking just one and striking out three.
The Suns used a pair of sacrifice flies in the 2nd and 3rd innings from CF Michael Taylor and 1B Brett Newsome respectively to get early run support for Grace.
Kannapolis answered with a bloop RBI single to shallow left center off the bat of SS Ross Wilson.
In two consecutive innings, a pair of Hagerstown hitters lofted high arching solo home run blasts. LF Wade Moore, who is from Salisbury, NC, in front of familiar faces in the crowd, launched his first four bagger of the season over both tiers of signage in right field. Then, RF Bryce Harper, the number one overall draft pick in Major League Baseball, connected on a towering big fly that cleared the right center field fence, his 11th of the season.
Hagerstown tacked on six runs in the 6th stanza off a two-RBI single by 2B Adrian Sanchez off RHP Chase Cooney's glove, which ricocheted into right field, a two-RBI one-base knock by Newsome through the right side, and a two-run rocket off the bat of SS Jason Martinson that bested the left center field wall. This was Martinson's third long ball of the current campaign.
RHP Dexter Carter (0-1), the losing pitcher got through 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs and five walks on three hits, including the Moore homer.
Kannapolis pitchers walked a season-high eleven batters in the contest.
The Suns and Intimidators will clash for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon beginning at 1:05pm. The Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-Game Show on the Hagerstown Suns Baseball Network presented by: MiLB.com will get underway at 12:50pm. The Suns will summon to the mound RHP A.J. Cole (0-3, 3.86) to face RHP Paul Burnside (3-2, 4.07) in the first game of the twin bill.
