POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost the homestand opener 4-3 to Hickory on Sunday afternoon. The Crawdads hit a solo home run in the third and built a three run lead after six and a half before the Power got on the board. West Virginia plated three in the bottom of the seventh on base hits by Elias Diaz and Drew Maggi. Hickory tallied one in the eighth to regain the lead for good. Casy Sadler allowed three runs over two innings and took the loss.
CURRY TO THE CURVE: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Matt Curry to Double-A Altoona after Sunday's Power game. The infielder was batting .361, third best in the South Atlantic League, and was among the league leaders in six other offensive categories, including slugging percentage (1st), walks (1st), and on-base percentage (1st). Curry had played either first or been the designated hitter in 46 of a possible 48 West Virginia games this season.
WILD AND WONDERFUL: Cole White was transferred to the Power roster when Matt Curry was promoted to Altoona. White was selected in the 42nd round of the 2008 draft out of the United States Military Academy, played 21 games for State College that summer, and spent 2009 serving active duty in the U.S. Army. The 26 year old began this season with Bradenton and .206 over 19 games while splitting time between first base and the outfield,
HISTORY VS. HICKORY: West Virginia continues its three game series against Hickory today. The Power and Crawdads will meet a total of 11 times this season after playing seven times all of last year. The Crawdads won the 2010 season set 4-3. The Power leadthe all-time series 40-27, and hold a 24-10 advantage at Appalachian Power Park.
LIGHTS OUT: Brandon Cumpton won his fifth straight decision on Wednesday. The right-hander is 5-0 this month with a 1.16 ERA over 31 innings pitched and has struck out 26 batters. During April, Cumpton was 0-3 with a 13.83 earned run average.
BRINGING THE PAYNE: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Vincent Payne to the West Virginia roster prior to Saturday's game at Delmarva. The right-hander from Long Beach, California, was drafted in the 12th round last year and pitched for two levels. Payne went 2-2 in the GCL with a 2.43 ERA, and was 0-0 with a 1.80 earned run average while with State College. Pittsburgh transferred Porfirio Lopez to the Spikes NYPL roster. Lopez pitched five relief innings in Friday's 19-inning affair.
PINPOINT CONTROL: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk just 100 batters this season, by far the fewest in the league. Power pitchers have walked the fewest batters in all of professional baseball.
POWER POINTS: Kawika Emsley-Pai's hitting streak was snapped at six game Friday with an 0-6 night. The catcher's on base streak is still in tact at 19 straight after two walks... Jameson Taillon has pitched five innings in each of his last two starts, and has only factored in the decision twice in seven starts... The Power will make up the May 3 rainout against Greensboro on June 14 at 5:30 pm as part of a doubleheader.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 3-2 at Chicago. The Pirates travel to New York today to open a four game series against the Mets... Indianapolis dropped a 9-2 final at Pawtucket... Altoona lost 4-1 at Binghamton... Bradenton lost 6-4 at Daytona.
