KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 30, 2011) -- Starting pitcher Paul Burnside tossed the first complete game shutout in the South Atlantic League this season, allowing two hits over seven innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators won the first game of Monday afternoon's doubleheader against the Hagerstown Suns, 3-0.

Burnside limited the Suns offensively, retiring the first 14 batters he faced before Kevin Keyes reached base on a strikeout-wild pitch. He lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning when Blake Kelso singled past a diving second baseman to right field. Burnside (4-2) went on to strike out nine batters in just the 20th 2-hitter in franchise history.

Dan Black led off the bottom of the second with a single and advanced to second base when Suns' starter A.J. Cole hit Brady Shoemaker. With two outs, John Spatola dropped a single into left field to bring home Black for the 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Brady Shoemaker added a two-run home run (6) with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give Burnside some wiggle room, making it 3-0 Kannapolis.

Cole took the loss for the Suns despite five innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts.

Game 2 of today's doubleheader will begin in a half hour at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium as Kannapolis sends Phil Negus to the mound against Hagerstown's Sammy Solis.
