Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - After being held to just 15 hits in their last three games, the Augusta GreenJackets exploded at the plate for ten runs on 13 hits to defeat the Rome Braves by a 10-3 score in a Memorial Day matinee from Rome.
The GreenJackets scored two runs in each of four separate innings, scoring runs in six of nine total innings in the contest. They came early and often for Augusta, with two in the first on a throwing error following a double steal and a Drew Biery sacrifice fly. In the third, Devin Harris doubled home Rafael Rodriguez to push the lead to three.
Rome answered with the first of two home runs the Braves would hit in the game. Hilton Richardson's two-run shot over the right-field wall cut Augusta's lead to one run, but that's as close as the Braves would get. Augusta answered in the fourth on a two-run single by Carlos Willoughby to push the lead back to 5-2.
Evan Gattis hit his second home run of the series - a solo shot - to cut the lead back to two, but the GreenJackets scored the final five runs of the game. Adam Duvall doubled home a run and Biery singled home another in the sixth, Duvall doubled home two more in the eighth and in the ninth Raynor Campbell singled home a run.
Gaspar Santiago (1-0) survived the Rome long balls to earn his first win of the season in just his fourth professional start. Santiago fired five innings and allowed three runs on three this with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Rome's Carlos Perez (3-6) was ineffective through five choppy innings, allowing five runs - four earned on six hits and three walks while striking out six.
Augusta has won their last three series finale games and with a win in Tuesday's series finale, the GreenJackets would not only push that streak to four but they'd also take two of three from the Braves to earn their third series win of 2011.
Shawn Sanford (1-4, 2.77) heads to the mound for the GreenJackets on Tuesday night against Rome's Carlos Perez (3-5, 5.53). First pitch from Rome will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
The GreenJackets return home on Sunday June 4th to open a three-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs. First pitch is at 5:35 and gates will open at 4:30 next Sunday.
