CHARLESTON, WV - The Hickory Crawdads struck for four runs in the top of the ninth, but the West Virginia Power hung on for the 8-6 win, before 1,591 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Monday afternoon.

The Power (24-25) struck early with a run in the bottom of the first against RHP Matt Thompson (2-3) and the Crawdads. SS Drew Maggi led off with a single and then moved to third on a base hit by CF Mel Rojas, Jr. Maggi then raced home on a sacrifice fly by RF Dan Grovatt, putting the Power ahead early, 1-0.

The Crawdads (27-23) came right back to tie it against RHP Brandon Cumpton (6-3) in the fourth inning. DH Tomas Telis belted his sixth homer of the season to start the frame and square the score, 1-1.

West Virginia promptly retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Grovatt hit a sharp two-run single through the middle to put the Power in front, 3-1.

Hickory continued to keep it close, pulling back within one run of tying it in the top of the seventh. 1B Andrew Clark led off with a walk and moved to third on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Clark then came home the final ninety feet on an RBI ground out by SS Alejandro Selen, making it just a 3-2 deficit.

The Power again had a response, stretching the lead with five runs (four earned) against RHP Nick McBride and the Crawdads in the seventh and eighth innings, making it 8-2. The rally was capped by a three-run homer by LF Rogelio Noris in the eighth.

However, the Crawdads refused to go down quietly, putting together a ninth-inning comeback attempt against RHP Trent Stevenson (S, 2). RF Josh Richmond started the rally with a walk and took second on defensive indifference. Clark followed with a single, moving Richmond to third with no outs. 3B Christian Villanueva then brought in Richmond with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 8-3. With Clark still at first and one away, 2B Odubel Herrera reached on a single, putting two on for Selen, who crushed a curveball over the left field wall for a three-run homer, his second long ball in as many games against the Power.

After the home run brought the 'Dads within just two runs of tying it, Stevenson settled down on the mound and retired the next two Crawdads in a row, as the Power hung on for the 8-6 win.
