Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power (32-26) scored seven runs between the third and fourth innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (24-32) 7-5 at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday. The Shorebirds outhit the Power 13 to six.
The Shorebirds raced to an early lead in the first. Lucas Herbst hit a lead off double down the left field line. He moved to third on a groundout by Roderick Bernadina and scored on a chopper to first by Tucker Nathans.
In the third inning, Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor issued back-to-back walks and then was removed with an apparent injury. Matt Hobgood entered out of the Shorebirds bullpen. Max Moroff bunted near the third baseline and Hobgood's throw to third was mishandled by Nathans. With the bases loaded, Junior Sosa grounded to first and two runs scored, the second on a throwing error by Adrian Marin. Then, Josh Bell connected on a two-run homer to right field to give the Power a 4-1 lead.
The Power added three more runs in the fourth to grab a 7-1 lead. DJ Crumlich led off with a single to shallow left-center. Then, Raul Fortunato doubled to right-center field to increase the lead to 5-1. Ashley Ponce scored Fortunato on a groundout to second. Later, Sosa's fielder's choice brought in Kawicka Emsley-Pai.
The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the fifth. Connor Narron led off with an infield single up the middle. After moving to second on a fielder's choice, Narron scored on a double to left field by Gregory Lorenzo.
West Virginia starter John Kuchno earned the win over 5.2 innings. He allowed seven hits and two runs.
Hobgood went four innings and yielded five hits and five runs in early relief.
Bennett Parry, who was added to the roster today, entered in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless with four strikeouts.
The Shorebirds fought back in the eighth inning with two runs. Nik Balog hit a one out single. After a walk to Wynston Sawyer, Torsten Boss hit a soft liner to left field to score Balog. Sawyer scored on a groundout by Narron.
In the ninth inning, the Shorebirds added a run on a single to center field by Nathans to score Lorenzo, who singled to open the inning. With the tying run at first, West Virginia closer Kyle Haynes struck out Balog to end the game.
Narron led the Shorebirds offense with a 3-for-4 game, his first multi-hit game since joining the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds and Power continue the series on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:05pm. RHP Juan Guzman is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
