Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
Hickory, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws (23-33) were greeted with a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Hickory Crawdads (31-25) in the opener of a three-game series, Tuesday night from L.P. Frans Stadium. The loss marked the fourth in five games for the BlueClaws.
Kevin Walter started the game and kept the highly potent Hickory lineup off the board until the third. Lewis Brinson reached on a single to left and Luis Marte followed with an infield single to put two on with no outs. Two hitters later it was Jorge Alfaro that hit his tenth homerun of the season and gave Hickory the 3-0 lead.
The BlueClaws had no answer against the Crawdads starter Frank Lopez until the top of the sixth. The southpaws walked the leadoff man, and gave up a one-out double to Roman Quinn to put two on.
Lopez's night was done after the double and he gave way to Jose Leclerc. The new pitcher walked Carlos Tocci, but the fourth ball was got by the catcher Alfaro and allowed Brian Pointer to come down from third with the first run.
Hickory picked up an insurance run in the eighth against Lakewood's Delvi Francisco. The righty walked the leadoff man Nick Vickerson, who then stole second, and scored on Nick Williams' RBI double, which made it 4-1.
Walter (0-1) finished his night after five innings and allowed just the one mistake to the Crawdads. The righty allowed three runs, on four hits; he walked three and struck out five.
Felix Santos delivered two scoreless innings of relief, before Francisco came on and allowed the run in the eighth.
For Hickory, Lopez went five and one-third innings and allowed the one unearned run, on one hit; he walked two and struck out six. Jose Leclerc took over and closed out the sixth and pitched a scoreless seventh.
Alex Claudio was the third and final arm used by the Crawdads. He picked up his ninth save of the year with two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
