Greenville Drive News Release
After a tough month of May, the Greenville Drive (17-39) were looking forward to turning the page with the turning of the calendar. They seem to like June so far, as they used a four-run first inning to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs (33-22) 6-2 for their second consecutive win.
Mookie Betts began the first inning outburst with a single against RiverDogs starter Luis Niebla (2-2), and a wild pitch followed by an error advanced him to third. Cody Koback followed with an RBI single, and he moved to third when his base hit was mishandled in center field for another error. After Alex Hassan walked, David Chester doubled to center to score both runners. Two batters later, Aneury Tavarez capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single to center.
The big inning was more than enough support for Drive starter Jacob Dahlstrand (1-1), who allowed just one run on three hits in six innings while walking one and striking out one.
Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Peter O'Brien drove a solo homer over the left field wall.
The Drive added a single run in the sixth, as Koback led off with a double and later scored when Chester smacked his second double of the night. Doubles did the trick again in the eighth, as back-to-back doubles by Betts and Koback extended the lead to 6-1.
The RiverDogs got their final run of the evening in the bottom half against Cody Kukuk, as Claudio Custodio singled to center to score Jose Rosario, who walked earlier in the frame.
Despite allowing a run, Kukuk flashed dominant stuff against the RiverDogs offense, as he fired three innings while punching out eight to finish the game.
Koback led the way for Greenville with three hits to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, the third longest streak in the league this season. Chester added two hits and three RBIs, while Betts and Tavarez chipped in with two hits apiece.
The same two teams will meet again in Charleston on Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. RHP Justin Haley (2-6, 4.64) starts for the Drive, while RHP Cesar Vargas (2-2, 3.15) will take the mound for the RiverDogs.
