POWER REPLAY: West Virginia beat Lakewood 4-3 in a rain-shortened, seven inning game on Thursday night. The Power backed starter Colton Cain with three first inning runs and added an important insurance run in the home half of the fourth inning on two singles and an error. In the bottom of the seventh, the game was delayed one hour and two minutes by rain before the decision was made to end the game early. Cain (5-5) notched the win with his sixth quality start of the year, while Porfirio Lopez tossed a scoreless seventh for his first SAL save.
MASTER OF ARMS: The Pirates have added Dave Turgeon to the Power coaching staff as the interim pitching coach for the remainder of the season. Turgeon was slated to manage the State College Spikes during his first season within the Pittsburgh system after spending the last four years as the associate head coach and pitching coach for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was selected in the 22 round of the 1987 draft by the Yankees, and spent two seasons as a manager in short-season ball. Turgeon replaces Jeff Johnson on the Power staff. Johnson has not been with the team for the last few weeks while spending time in North Carolina dealing with a family matter.
NINE INNINGS' West Virginia has played four extra inning games this year and one rain-shortened game, and of those five contests, Lakewood has been the opponent in four. The clubs played an a ten inning game on May 23 (6-5 LWD), extras on June 10 (scheduled for seven but went eight; 3-0 WVP), 15 innings on June 11 (4-3 LWD), and last night's rain-shortened seven inning game.
TIME TO GET CRACKIN': West Virginia and Lakewood continue their season series tonight at Appalachian Power Park. The BlueClaws hold the all-time advantage in this match-up with a 48-35 record against the Power. West Virginia trails at home with a 19-29 record against Lakewood. The Power and BlueClaws will meet a total of 19 times this season after playing 16 times last year. Lakewood has a 5-3 edge, keyed by a series sweep in Charleston from May 20 through 23, though the Power took two out of three last weekend at FirstEnergy Park.
SAL ALL-STARS: Brandon Cumpton, Dan Grovatt, and Jameson Taillon were selected to represent the Power in the 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star Game in June 21. Cumpton is 6-4 this season with a 5.11 ERA, but steam rolled though May with a 6-0 record and a 1.18 earned run average. Grovatt is batting .297 over 53 games with one home runs and 21 runs batted in. Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, is 2-1 with a 3.71 earned run average during his firstprofessional season.
SHUTDOWN CITY: Three Power pitchers combined Wednesday to record the club's seventh shutout of the season. In 2009 during the first year of Pirates affiliation, West Virginia recorded seven shutouts, while tossing eight during the 2010 season. This year, the Power pitching staff needed just 65 games to record seven white-washings. Only Hagerstown (8) has more shutout wins this season in the SAL.
POWER POINTS: Jameson Taillon has had two of his nine professional starts suspended due to weather (April 27 versus Hagerstown and last Thursday at Lakewood)... Saturday's game was the Power's fourth extra inning game of the season. West Virginia is 1-3 in extra inning games, having only won in extras on last Friday.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: This Pirates beat the Astros 5-4 Thursday to cap a three game series sweep... Indianapolis had its series opener with Rochester rained out... Altoona beat New Britain 3-1. Kyle McPherson earned his first Double-A victory in the process... Bradenton fell 10-1 at Charlotte... State College opens it season tonight at Williamsport.
