POWER REPLAY: West Virginia beat Charleston 6-2 on Monday evening. The Power back starting pitcher Brandon Cumpton with five runs over support over the first four innings, including a three-run third. Cumpton earned his second straight win, keyed by pitching three hitless innings to start the game. Elias Diaz drove in a pair to pace the offense.
FREE RIDE: Dan Grovatt has walked 24 times this season over his first 28 games played and is tied for the league lead. In 2010, Power outfielder Evan Chambers led the South Atlantic League with 92 walks. Over Chambers first 28 games, he earned 26 free passes.
OH SNAP: West Virginia stopped its road losing streak at seven with a 1-0 win Saturday night. The Power lost their first road game of the season (April 15 at Augusta), won the next three, were subsequently swept in five games at Kannapolis, and fell in the first two games of the Augusta series before winning the final two. West Virginia has won three straight since its seven game road skid was snapped.
SERIES STARTING STRUGGLES: West Virginia notched a rare series opening win on Monday night at Charleston. The Power lost their first five openers prior to a 5-2 win on April 30 against Greensboro and dropped the opener of this road trip 7-6 at Augusta before winning last night. West Virginia is 2-6 during the first game of the eight series they have played this season.
BRING ON THE BABY BOMBERS: West Virginia continues its series in Charleston, SC against the RiverDogs tonight. The Power and RiverDogs will play 14 more times in 2011 after seeing each other only four times in 2010. West Virginia leads the all-time set 13-8, and have gone 7-6 since 2005 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT: On Thursday, West Virginia played it longest game of the season time-wise, falling 7-6 in a nine-inning game that lasted three hours and 13 minutes. The Power's loss Friday occurred during their shortest game of the season; a nine inning affair that took only one hour and 58 minutes.
BACK FOR MORE: Rogelio Noris hit 15 home runs for West Virginia during the 2010 season and enters the year eighth all-time in Power history in the category. Stephen Chapman holds the single-season record with 24, which is also the most by any player during his stint with West Virginia. Noris is two behind Andrew LaFave's 17 for seventh all-time and four away from moving into the top five.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia had not split a series yet this season until the recent set at Augusta.The Power had won three series and lost three so far this season prior to the split with the 'Jackets... WestVirginia pitchers combined for their fourth shutout of the season Saturday. The 2010 edition tossed eight total shutouts... The Power will open a four-game homestand against Kannapolis on May 13 at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia will wear special charity jerseys to be auctioned off to raise money for Relay for Life.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 at PNC Park. The Buccos are 18-17 and have a winning record for the first time this deep in the season since May 29, 2004... Indianapolis knocked off Durham 7-5... Altoona lost in walk-off fashion at Harrisburg, falling 3-2... Bradenton did not play.
