Tonight: The Gnats, SAL affiliate of the New York Mets, play game two in their four-game series against the Hickory Crawdads, SAL affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The Gnats are 3-2 on their current eight-game home stand.
Last Night: RHP Gonzalez Germen dominated Hickory over seven shutout innings to earn his second win of the year. He gave up four hits and two walks, struck out seven and retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. The Gnats scored three runs in both the second and third innings thanks in part to seven combined walks from the Hickory pitching staff. DH Blake Forsythe was 2-4 with a pair of RBI singles, while 2B Luis Nieves was 2-3 with a walk and two RBI.
Now Pitching: RHP Greg Peavey, the Gnats' Opening-Night starter, will make his seventh professional start tonight. Peavey threw six shutout innings in his last start, his longest outing of 2011. He did not walk a batter for the second time in 2011 and fanned six. The Mets drafted Peavey in the 6th round in 2010 out of Oregon State. As a Beaver in 2010, Peavey was an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and a two-time conference Player of the Week. Peavey had been drafted twice before: in the 24th round of the 2007 draft out of Hudson's Bay High School by the New York Yankees and in the 32 nd round of the 2009 draft by the Houston Astros. In high school, he was named Washington's Class 3A baseball Player of the Year in 2007. Peavey has had national-level success even before high school, helping pitch the Hazel Dell Metro Little League team to the Little League World Series in 2000, and the Hazel Dell Metro teams that won Babe Ruth Championships in 2001 and 2002. The Gnats are 1-5 when Peavey starts and have supported him with 4.33 runs per game.
Cory's Cuts: Cory Vaughn leads Savannah in batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.440) and slugging (.436). He is the only active Gnat: hitting above .275, with an on-base percentage over .330 and a slugging percentage better than .400. He is seventh in the SAL in OBP and 20th in batting average while hitting .355/.524/.452 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in 31 at bats in his last 10 games.
Roster Update: Tuesday, outfielder Javier Rodriguez was transferred to Extended Spring Training. The Gnats' roster currently sits at 23 players.
Strong Starting: In the first five games of the Gnats' home stand, starters Taylor Whitenton, Greg Peavey, Ryan Fraser, Erik Goeddel and Gonzalez Germen have combined on 31.2 innings yielding just three runs on 19 hits. In the last 10 games, Savannah starters are 5-1 with a 1.13 ERA (7 ER/55.2 IP) with 44 strikeouts, 15 walks and 42 hits allowed. In those 10 games, Gnats starters have a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.93 and have given up as many as two runs just twice. Four times Gnats starters have held their opponent without a run and four times they have held their opponent to one run.
More Pitching: The Gnats, who entered Monday third in the league in ERA, improved to second in the SAL in ERA (3.70) by allowing just one run. The Gnats' 247 strikeouts are fourth-most and their 89 walks are fifth-fewest. Hickory, which began Monday second in ERA, slipped to fourth (3.86).
Vs. Hickory: The Gnats are 2-3 against Hickory in 2011, 1-0 at home and 1-3 on the road. This series concludes the season-series between the two teams. The Gnats and Crawdads split the 2010 season series 2-2 with all four games played at Historic Grayson Stadium. This is the first series against a Northern Division opponent the Gnats have hosted at Historic Grayson Stadium in 2011.
