Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, SC - The Lakewood BlueClaws got out to an early lead, and for the 2nd night in a row they couldn't make it hold up. Lakewood led 2-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd, and ended up losing 9-2 Tuesday night. The BlueClaws lost their 2nd straight agme 9-2 to Greensboro on Tuesday night. BlueClaws pitchers were not their sharpest, and the hitters hit into 2 double plays to end scoring threats in the ballgame.
Christina Yelich was the Florida Marlins 1st round pick last June, 17th overall, and he showed exactly why he is such a highly touted prospect Tuesday night. Yelich went 4-5 in the game with 1 double, 3 singles, a stolen base, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. He also made a couple of highlight reel plays in the outfield, and left everyone who saw him play on Tuesday thoroughly impressed. RHP Zach Neal got the win for Greensboro as he pitched 6 innings, allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 4 walks, and struck out 6. He improves to 2-2 on the year.
It was a different story for Lakewood pitching. SP Ervis Manzanillo fell to 1-2 with the loss after going just 3 1/3rd innings giving up 4 hits, 4 walks, and 5 runs while striking out 3. He pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 1st inning, but was unable to control his pitches from there on out. RHP Chase Johnson came in and relieved Manzanillo, and he didn't fair much better. Johnson pitched 2 1/3rd innings, allowed all 3 inherited runners to score, 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. It was the worst outing of the year for Johnson, who had been dominant to start 2011. Zach Collier had 2 hits for Lakewood, and Alan Schoenberger continued his hot hitting with a 2 RBI double in the top of the 2nd to plate the only 2 runs of the game for the BlueClaws.
Wednesday morning it will be some early morning baseball as first pitch is scheduled for 10:45 am. Game 3 of the 4 game series will feature LHP Mario Hollands (2-3, 3.98 ERA) on the mound for Lakewood and RHP Kyle Winters (3-2, 4.91 ERA) throwing for Greensboro.
