Hickory Crawdads News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats edged the Hickory Crawdads, 3-1, before 776 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium on Tuesday night.
Savannah (14-17) got out to a quick start again, striking for the game's first run in the bottom of the first against RHP Roman Mendez (L, 4-1). CF Darrell Ceciliani worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by 2B Wilfredo Tovar. After a double steal advanced both runners, a grounder to second from 3B Aderlin Rodriguez enabled Ceciliani to score and put the Sand Gnats up, 1-0.
The Crawdads (19-12) came right back to tie the game in the top of the second against RHP Greg Peavey (W, 2-1). RF Josh Richmond led off with a double to right field. 3B Christian Villanueva then bounced a grounder to second that Tovar failed to field cleanly, enabling runners to reach the corners with no outs. One out later, 1B Jhonny Gomez pushed a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to bring in Richmond and tie it at 1-1.
The Sand Gnats, though, moved right back in front with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Rodriguez worked a two-out walk to keep the inning going and join Ceciliani on base, before SS Robbie Shields drove both runners in with a double to lift Savannah ahead, 3-1.
RHP Colby Killian and RHP Joe Van Meter combined to deal the final three frames in scoreless fashion for the 'Dads, but the Savannah bullpen matched them, with LHP Josh Edgin (S, 5) pitching a scoreless ninth to nail down the 3-1 win for the Sand Gnats.
