Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - After scoring five runs in the first two innings, the Augusta GreenJackets looked to be setting on cruise control against the Rome Braves on Tuesday night. That wasn't the case, as the Braves rallied to put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning and the GreenJackets held on for an eventful 5-4 win over the Braves.
Augusta sent a combined 16 hitters to the plate in the first two innings, scoring twice in the first on a two-run single by Adam Duvall to take a 2-0 lead. The GreenJackets added to the lead in the second on a Chris Lofton RBI triple, Bobby Haney's run-scoring single and a bases loaded walk to Josh Mazzola. The damage could've been worse against the Braves but Augusta stranded five runners in the first two innings, leaving the bases loaded in the second. On the night, the GreenJackets left nine men aboard while the Braves stranded ten.
Rome starter David Filak (1-2) was chased after just a 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and a season-high five walks.
The Braves chipped away at the lead in the fourth with a leadoff homerun by Edward Salcedo to make it a 5-1 game. After Austin Fleet put a pair on with back-to-back walks in the fifth, Augusta pitching coach Steve Kline visited the mound and after a discussion with home plate umpire Carlos Torres was ejected from the game. Fleet responded to the ejection of his pitching coach by inducing a double play ball and a groundout to end the fifth.
Fleet (4-2) won his third straight start, firing five innings for the GreenJackets and allowing a run on three hits and a season-high four walks while striking out a pair.
Rome closed the gap even further with a run in the sixth on an Elmer Reyes RBI single and with two more in the eighth. After Tom Vessella got two quick outs in the eighth, back-to-back doubles by Evan Gattis and Reyes plated a run and Reyes scored on Bobby Rauh's RBI single. Edward Concepcion induced a groundout to leave the tying run aboard.
Drew Bowlin allowed a one-out walk in the ninth, but got a pair of outs against back-to-back hitters to close out the game and earn his second save of the year.
With the win, the GreenJackets earned back-to-back victories for just the third time this season and have now won four of six, their best such stretch of the season. Shawn Sanford (1-2, 3.54) takes the ball on Wednesday with the chance to pitch the GreenJackets to their first series win of the year in eight tries as he faces Rome's Caleb Brewer (0-2, 2.95). First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
