Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD- The Hagerstown Suns (20-10) scored first in their opening standoff with their cross-state rival, Delmarva Shorebirds (20-10), but it was the visiting club that bested Hub City's boys of summer by a score of 3-2.
Suns LHP Robbie Ray, a 12th round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, made his first Minor League start and threw a no-hitter through 4.0 innings. Ray, who did not factor into the decision, ended with a line of 5.0 innings, one hits, no walks, and six strikeouts.
The Suns scored first in the last of the 2nd inning when LF Randolph Oduber walked his way aboard before DH Jason Martinson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Oduber to second base. Oduber was plated when 1B Mills Rogers lofted an RBI sac fly to deep center field.
Calling upon RHP Wilson Eusebio (0-1), the losing pitcher, in the 6th inning, the Suns Dominican righthander would allow a two-run double off the bat of LF Kipp Schutz, scoring 2B Ty Kelly, who reached on a base-on-balls and SS Jonathan Schoop, who singled to left.
Hagerstown would tie the game with a mammoth solo home run into the right field fence from C David Freitas. The University of Hawaii product has crushed four tape measure blasts in 2011, including this shot in to the visiting bullpen which tied the game at 2-2.
However, in the top of the 8th frame off Eusebio, 1B Mike Flacco, the younger brother of NFL QB Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens, lined an RBI double over the head of Oduber in left field to score Kelly, who reached on an infield single behind the pitcher's mound.
The Shorebirds winning pitcher of record, Jason Gurka (2-0) tossed 2.2 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits, in addition to striking out fire and surrendering the solo shot to Freitas.
With two outs in the 8th frame, Delmarva sprung RHP David Walters (9 SV) from the bullpen to pitch 1.1 scoreless innings, while fanning one.
The Suns will take on the Shorebirds for Game 2 at 10:35am on Tuesday for an Education Day at Municipal Stadium. Broadcast coverage will begin at 10:20 on MiLB.com with the Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show at 10:20am. For the Hagerstown Suns, LHP Bobby Hansen (3-1, 4.37) will deal against Delmarva Shorebirds RHP Luis Noel (2-2, 4.75.
