KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 10, 2011) - The Kannapolis Intimidators rode the bat of centerfielder Trayce Thompson to a 7-3 win over the Lexington Legends at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Tuesday night.
Thompson launched a two-run homerun over the left-center field wall with one out in the bottom of the seventh to put the Intimidators ahead 5-2. Thompson's homer, his team-leading seventh of the season, was the first by Kannapolis in 10 games.
In the bottom of the fifth, Thompson hit a two-run double to put Kannapolis on the board, catapulting in front of the Legends for a 2-1 lead. Thompson finished 2-for-5 on the night with four RBI and two runs scored. 2B Ross Wilson drove him home with a single to put the Intimidators ahead 3-1 in the fifth.
The Legends struck first for the second night in a row. Catcher Roberto Pena led off the second inning with a double to center field. The next batter, LF Bryce Lane, drove Pena home with a single up the middle, putting Lexington on top 1-0.
The Legends collected their second run in the top of the seventh when 1B Tyler Burnett led off with a triple. Three batters later, 2B Delino De Shields Jr. drove him home with a double that he was thrown out on trying to stretch into a triple.
Lexington added one more run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by 3B Mike Kwasnicka, but Kannapolis answered right back in the bottom of the frame on consecutive RBI singles by DH Juan Silverio and 3B Drew Lee.
Matt Heidenreich (2-1) earned the win for the Intimidators, pitching 7 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on 11 hits. Heidenreich was aided by two double plays defensively for Kannapolis.
