Hagerstown's Well Balanced Attack Carries Suns to 7-3 Win

Hagerstown, MD- The Hagerstown Suns (21-11) evened their four game series with the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds (20-12) at Municipal Stadium on an Education Day Tuesday by a score of 7-3. Suns LHP Bobby Hansen (4-1), the winning pitcher, went 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits, while walking three and fanning three.

The 10:35am standoff saw Delmarva plate two runs in the 2nd inning when C Justin Dalles drilled an RBI double passed CF Michael Taylor to bring home 1B Michael Flacco, who singled through the left side to get aboard. Then, 2B Dudley Leonora singled into right field to summon home Dalles to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead.

Hagerstown would answer in the bottom of the 2nd, as Taylor doubled down the left field line passed the outstretched dive of 3B Adam Gaylord scoring LF Wade Moore, who walked. Then, Suns 3B Blake Kelso ripped a ground rule 2 RBI double down the left field chalk to score Taylor and 1B Brett Newsome, who got on base with a walk. The Suns finished the 2nd stanza up 3-2.

Delmarva RHP Luis Noel (2-3), the losing pitcher, threw 3.0 innings and surrendered four earned runs on three hits. Noel walked seven and struck out three.

Individual runs were scored for both ballclubs in the 3rd frame as 'Birds SS Jonathan Schoop came home on a botched double play attempt by Suns 2B Adrian Sanchez, who dropped a feed from SS Jason Martinson. Then, the Suns answered with a bases loaded walk worked by Taylor allowing Martinson to score run number four to give Hagerstown a 4-3 advantage.

The Suns garnered two more runs of insurance in the 4th inning and one more run in the 5th frame. C David Freitas lined home Sanchez with an RBI double up the right field line before a bad underhand toss from Leonora at second base allowed Freitas to motor home. An inning later, RF Bryce Harper, as part of a 2-for-5 afternoon at the plate, singled home to score Sanchez once again. Sanchez shot a double down the left field chalk to get to second base.

LHP Chris Manno struck out two in the top of the 9th to seal the deal on the Suns 21st win of the season. Hagerstown now has sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division.

On Wednesday night, Game Three will feature Suns LHP Matt Grace (3-3, 4.31) against the Shorebirds RHP Tim Adleman (3-1, 5.28). Pregame radio coverage on WJEJ AM 1240 will begin at 6:20pm with the Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pregame Show.
